95 to 99 were the Supercharged Rivs? 95 was the Series I 3800 and 96 and up had the Series II engine, which is the more perferred. http://rivperformance.editboard.com/index.htm will have a great deal of info about those engines.

Also, the supercharged engine was optional in 95-97 cars, became std equipment 98/99.

Some may consider the series II as preferred, but the Series I is my favorite. The supercharger is bare naked as opposed to covered over and in all liklihood, just as spunky as the series II.

I will be the first to say my 95 has had tons of problems, the most noteable was what felt like a miss fire or transmission shutter at 40 MPH. Drove me crazy for 4 years. But a new EGR valve has been the cars salvation. And it is just so sweet to drive or ride in.

The better news is the 95's are a real bargain, since they were maligned so much. But they still look like a 96-99 with a uncluttered dash board to boot.

Sorry 96-99 owners. It's just my opinion but the believe the 95 is the nicer car overall.

John, I wouldn't say any of the years from 95-99 is any <span style="font-style: italic">nicer</span> than the others. They are all beautiful cars, and the various years each have some assorted problems from time to time, like most cars do. But I certainly won't be bashing you for telling us the 95's are your favorite! <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Don't forget about the "supercharger oil". There is lots of information on the supercharged Buick V-6 in the fwd Pontiac Grand Prix and RegalGS.org websites . . . as an alternative to the listed link, if desired.

As I recall, the first year or so of the 95-era Rivs had a base model (with the normal Buick 3.8L V-6 in it) that looked that way (unfortunately) and it was advertised with a reasonably low price when new. You could always get the upgrade to the supercharaged engine version, though, but I think one reason the later model years were preferred is that they came with nicer interior trim than the first few years did. Same exterior styling, but with nicer "guts" . . . and the s/c engine became standard. The first years did have nice interiors, but lacked the nicer trim (i.e., woodgrain) of the later model years. To me, if I wanted a car like that, finding a good deal on a good-condition/low mileage vehicle could be more important than what particular model year it might be (taking into account the things that made each model year "good" compared to another model year).

I had a 1996 and later got a 1998. The 96 didn't have memory seat and mirrors or heated seat, which would have been nice for Michigan. The 98 has heated seats both sides, plus memory seat and outside mirrors that are also heated. They are activated with the rear window defoster use. The inside auto dimming mirror also contains a digital compass that I didn't have in the 96. I think that upgrades were each year of the last models. I wish the Riviera was still being made,but everyone wants a four door I guess.
