Olle
Hi, I am not sure if this is the correct forum for repair questions, but I'll give it a try. I live in Sweden and have a 1965 Riviera. I have a problem with the turn signal not going back automatically, so I removed the steering wheel. In the Buick Service Manual they use a remover tool for removing the cover which covers the turn signal assembly. Can I use some other tool to remove the cover without damaging the cover? Thanks in advance for any answers. Olle
Jim Cannon
Yes, it is just pressed on. I used an internal gear puller under the lip of the metal cover and gently worked it up and off. There should be a pin on the underside of the steering wheel that cancels the signal by hitting a piece on the turn signal switch. If the pin is there, then the plastic parts of the switch have probably broken. The original tool is in the picture here. It slips under the lip of the cover. Then you thread bolts of a gear puller into it.
RivNut
I take it that this is just a tight slip fit then with no fasteners. So there could be other ways of removing it.
1965rivgs
Yes Ed, I use a small angled pry bar under the lip of the cover and use the steering shaft (with nut to protect the threads) as a fulcrum to pry against. A little at a time around the perimeter of the cover and it comes right off. The press fit is very mild, Tom
Olle
Thanks everyone. I'll try with a standard puller, if it doesn't fit I'll buy a smaller. I hope it's not stuck, and assume it's no problem to put it back to place. Maybe I can get this to work this weekend ? Olle Riviera
