1918/19 Universal Removal

Recommended Posts

From the parts manual, it looks like there is a nut on the end of the output shaft to hold the universal on. You'll have to reach through the end of the universal with a socket to get it our.

At that point it should just slide out.

Careful you can collapse your u joint frame like that. On my 1929 Buick I had to remove the rear section of the trans and use a press to separate the u joint from the shaft. I cannot remember if I had to replace the bearing or not.

I have removed the retaining nut and big square washer from the end of the shaft and was expecting it to slide off but it appears to be extremely tight! I have it under constant tension with the puller in the hope it will release of its own accord but if not I will have to remove the rear housing and press it off as suggested above.

Gavin,    If the universal isn,t badly worn,   I would leave it in place.  I have been rebuilding a right hand gearbox.   A couple that I picked up have been broken,  probably from trying to remove the universal  and the rear housing.

After sitting a week with as much tension on it that I can safely apply it still hasnt budged! Unfortunately it is quite worn and I do need to remove it to repair it. I will try to remove the complete rear housing and press it off hopefully without breaking it!
