Questions about dual carbs on a straight 8

Hello guys. I just picked up a 49 special today. Mainly for parts and spare parts for my 46 super. The main reason for the purchase was the dual carbs and duel exhaust manifolds. I know nothing about these set ups except they were available in 41 and 42 models. This looks like a more modern 263 motor. Any suggestions on the set up will be appreciated?

1953 started with 6,950,620. So you are 150 thousand into '53 production.  The last digit, 4, is the series, 40, which is the only series that had straight in '53. The '53 engine had some improvements from prior years, I am told, even though it as the last year for straight eight.  Your score just became better.

Greetings Craig

Just took photo of 248" dual setup Im in process of refurbishing. Actually have some extra stuff for 248"setup.  Long range hope to install on 1951 stick 263, then swap into 1940 Super Coupe. Lemme know if I can assist with parts or info. 20180826_194817.thumb.jpg.7b8f8fce389a77189ec364062cf401c9.jpg20180826_194749.thumb.jpg.291c7920936714d74d9909b4f3390465.jpg

Hey Craig

Looks like two "front" or "single" carbs are being used opening at the same time. Rear carb still has vacuum control valve under it. Guessing it was fixed open and used as spacer to maintain alignment for use of stock air cleaner. Both front frame motor mount stands should be same height stock. Usual trick was to turn driver side mount bolted to engine downside up and cut frame mount down to that height to clear front output of exhaust. Hopefully if flappers in exhaust dont move, that they are stuck in open position, (unless your planning lots of cold weather operation.) Ive read two F__ flathead carbs were used on the converted 248s, but carbking could possibly chime in on sizing for 263" application? Just for giggles I drilled and installed fittings on my 40 Super exhaust manifold and used a fuel/air gauge (Lamda)sp? to find out if rich or lean on carburation. Phun! Good find! Greg

Thanks Greg, I’ll definitely let you know if I need anything. I’m pretty excited to find this. I think it will go really well with the the theme of my car! ( kind of old school hot rod /cruiser) I have a few other projects to finish up in the garage so it might be a slow start.
