lrlforfun
OK Riviera People: I recent purchased a gentleman's entire stash of Buick parts. Several brake drums were in the parts pile. My question....... Is the 65 Riviera, Wildcat and Electra front drum a 1 year only? It has the 45 fins and the small hub. Did Buick use the 45 fin front drum on 66 and newer? Thanks, Mitch
RivNut
Not sure when the 90 fin drums came into being but take a look at the 65 drums you just picked up. I think that you'll see that only the hub is smaller. You'll see a gap between the hub and the hole in the drum. If I'm right then the earlier drum - not including the hub which is riveted to the drum - is the same as the earlier drums which are riveted to the larger diameter hub and have no gap between the hub and the hole in the drum. telriv
I've taken earlier drums & chucked them up in a drum lathe & machined the hubs to fit WITHOUT removing the drum from the hub.
DualQuadDave
66 still had 45 fin. The 65/66 are unique. Like Tom said, the early ones can be machined, but cheaper/easier to buy the right ones.
RivNut
Are we discussing drums, hubs, or the drum/hub assembly? We seem to be discussing both but we're not on the same page. The hubs are different because in 65 with the availability of the "rally" wheel, the wheel was produced with a register ring (unlike the 64 Wildcat wheel.) The register ring mandated a smaller hub. But, the same drum was used as previous years. There was just a gap between the hole in the drum and the hub. Ill try to take some pictures tomorrow to show what I'm talking about. wildcat1562
1958 to 1966 full size Buick had the 45 fin drums, 67 to 70 had the 90 fin drums, now , there is the hub that is different on them in so many years, but the drums are the same, and also the 90 fin drums will go on the 65 66 cars and the break shoes are the same
RivNut
Here are the pictures that I said that I'd post. The first is of a hub/drum off of a 63 or 64 that imparted out. The second is from a 65. You can see how the hub fill the center hole in the drum on the 63/64. On the 65,, you can see the gap between the edge of the hole and the the hub. I too a set of calipers and compared the two. The drums themselves, no hub, are the same. m I measured the distance between the points on these calipers with a digital caliper. It said the diameter of the hole was 3-57/128 or 3.4440 inches.
