Findareatta
I have owned my 1990 coupe for over two years now. At first I would park in the garage with no noticeable odor but now it has a strong gas smell that lasts until I move the car back outside. There is no gas puddles. Does anyone know the common reason for the odor? I'm concerned for safety.
Ronnie
A good inspection of the fuel system on the engine is a good place to start. Also check the purge canister to see if the lines going to it are in good condition. Are you located in an area where rust is a problem? If so the fuel lines near the gas tank are prone to rust as well as the filler pipe going to the gas tank.
DAVES89
The purge cannister Ronnie is referring to is that football looking thing between the radiator and engine on the drivers side. Check the rubber hoses that connect the hard plastic lines together. I would check all the tubing for a bad hose. At the age these cars are, the hose may look good but be rotten inside. Ronnie
I was referring to the charcoal canister (see photo) under the engine compartment fusebox. Checking all the rubber hoses is a good idea too.
Barney Eaton
I vote for Ronnie's answer Had a similar problem but the hose would come off again in a few weeks. Finally had to get under the car and reposition the hose going to the canister so it would not continue to pull off.

fordrodsteven
Om my '88 I would get a strong smell after filling the tank. I thought it was the tank leaking but it was an issue with the fill tube. I bought a replacement from Jim Finn and it's been fine ever since.
SpecialEducation
Check the oil for a gassy smell, and make sure the fuel rail is holding pressure. I had a leaky injector once, and it would bleed all of the fuel out of the rail and into the manifold. Stinky, but no puddle. Fixed the injector, but damage was done. Washed out the cylinder and scared it all up. :o(
cuzinpete
Had this problem with my 1990 Riviera. It was just the vapor hose.
Cargirl
Are you sure your car is not a jaguar? They always smell like gas, particularly in the trunk area. ?
