David_Leech
1928 standard six The steering in this car is terrible. Nothing is seized or binding, I just think it's overly heavy. If there was one thing I could change, I would upgrade the steering. I'm fine with a lower ratio box. Has anyone attempted an upgrade before? RichBad
I’m told that having the box set up correctly can make quite a difference. You can also convert to needle roller bearings. I’ve done that but haven’t driven it since so can’t say how much difference it makes.
Spinneyhill
1. Overhaul the steering box. 2. Overhaul all the steering components: drag link ends, tie rod ends, king pins. 3. Skinny tires. 4. Blow the tires up harder. My manual says "exactly" 40 psi for the front tires. These things all helped me lighten the steering. Update: 5. Ensure you use a semi-fluid grease in the steering box, not a chassis grease. The semi fluid grease will (gradually) flow back after the worm is wiped clean of lubricant in a turn. NLGI 00 is the grade to use. Edited July 15, 2018 by Spinneyhill (see edit history)
