Guest
I am currently having the upholstery done in my '38 Plymouth coupe. As the door panels were both missing when I got the car I have no idea of what the sewing pattern originally was on the panels. I would really like to get this correct. Please help if you can. Thanks, Greg
keiser31
Well, Google came up with this and others....https://www.google.com/search?biw=1056&bih=520&tbm=isch&sa=1&ei=rQQwW6GPEcS0zwKTqpi4Dg&q=1938+Plymouth+coupe+interior&oq=1938+Plymouth+coupe+interior&gs_l=img.3...700.3298.0.3784.9.9.0.0.0.0.354.922.0j2j1j1.4.0....0...1c.1.64.img..5.0.0....0.PowrhxSVEDQ#imgrc=GU2ofGteugZhaM:
Guest
Thanks keiser, I have also found similar images. They seem to alternate between one horizontal line with six vertical lines below, or a horizontal line with a series of wide, narrow, wide, narrow vertical lines below. I think (but can't confirm) that anything remotely vintage seems to suggest the six vertical lines. Perhaps the wide/narrow patters I've seen are simply a revisioning by later upholsterers? Spinneyhill
Rats! I found a pdf file of the 1936-42 Plymouth service manual, but the "Body" chapter showing images of the doors and hardware all show 1942 models! Poot! There are some images of factory brochures here but not of the '36 interior. The narrow strips are '35, the alternating wide-narrow-wide-narrow are '37. https://www.allpar.com/old/buyers-guide/plymouth-1935-39.html This brochure shows the narrow stripes. https://www.autopaper.com/1936-plymouth-dealer-sales-brochure-folder-de-luxe-models-new-peak-of-perfection.php This brochure is from the Old Car Manual Project. It is a good scan and you can see the front seam follows the door edge and there is a wide gap (a seam missing?) in the middle below the door handle. http://www.oldcarbrochures.com/static/NA/Plymouth/1936 Plymouth/1936 Plymouth Brochure/index1.html It is interesting that the Plymouth Club judging specifications mention the colour combinations and fabrics, but not the patterns. http://www.pwchryslerclub.org/Judging Guide Early.pdf Edited June 24, 2018 by Spinneyhill (see edit history)

ply33
Kathy Schrack who advertises in the classified section of the Plymouth Bulletin (the Plymouth Owners Club's magazine) makes upholstery kits for a number of 1930s Plymouths. She might have the pattern for your '38 Plymouth.
Guest
BINGO! Looks like we have a winner! Thank you Spinney I think it's safe to go with the one horizontal line and the six vertical sections, judging by that image. (whew!) Spinneyhill
this one in Hemmings confirms that... although it is restored. https://www.hemmings.com/magazine/hcc/2016/04/Touring-Treasure---1938-Plymouth-P-6/3749551.html Edited June 25, 2018 by Spinneyhill (see edit history)
jpage
This is very close to the '36 Dodge interior only not as fancy.
Guest
That is an interesting picture. All the "original" type images I've been able to locate have shown the top horizontal line to bisect the window crank and the door latch handle, which is also how it shows in the '38 Owner's manual. I have also come across several that people swear are original, only to find out later they have been reupholstered and changed at some point. A small detail perhaps, but only those who know will know. After all, it's been 80 years.
