Den41Buick
Happy Father's Day to all. Went out for a ride in the 41. All of a sudden the speedometer and odometer stopped working at the same time. Any guesses before I pull the dash apart? Thanks.
Ben Bruce aka First Born
No need to pull the dash apart. Replace the speedometer drive cable. Ben

Spinneyhill
But why did the cable break? You might find the speedo itself has stuck. I don't know anything about Buick speedos.... my 1930 Dodge Brothers 8 speedo has a die-cast body that is breaking down over time. The zinc in the amalgam oxidises and expands, gradually nipping up (squeezing) on the drive. Eventually the cable is not strong enough to turn it and it breaks. Look further as well to find out why it broke.
Buicknutty
I had the same issue with mine a couple of years ago, and it was the speedo itself. I sent it to "Scott Speedometer Service", which I have used before, and they rebuilt it. Now it works well, and is quite accurate as well. Though it is worth checking the cable, and drive gears. Guest
After you have found out why your cable broke and are installing a new one make sure to lubricate only the bottom shirt of the new cable. The lube will work up the cable. If you use too much lube it goes all the way p and gets into the speedo head and gums things up.
Lawrence Helfand
Mine broke as well..common malady and all you need is a new lubed up core and leave the outer case in place connected to speedo and disconnect other end pulling out the broken core which will fall out and shove a new core up the old casing .Plenty of cores around for sale

Matt Harwood
How'd you fix it? What was ultimately the problem? Give us an update on your solution so that hopefully your situation can help someone in the future!
Morgan Wright
The only lubricant to use is Vaseline, maybe with a little graphite powder added. Other greases will thicken over time, Vaseline never does.
