Check your state's vehicle code or call your DMV Public Inquiry Unit (local offices have rarely been knowledgeable, in my experience). In Califunny, if your load extends more than 3 feet beyond the rearmost part of a vehicle, it must display a red flag in daytime (lumber yards have them) and a red light at night (LED battery-operated bicycle lights at Walmart).
