STINGER
Someone put a 1953 generator in my 1939 buick. would the voltage regulator have to match up with the generator.
Spinneyhill
As long are both for the same voltage and ground.
Frank DuVal
Technically the amperage rating of the "current regulator" should match the generator. The big question is how different is the current rating of each generator? It will work fine except for when the regulator says 35 amps is OK, keep the generator at full bore (full field), but the generator is only good for 20 amps max. Might overheat the generator after a while. The matching regulator will limit the generator output to the generator and not overheat it. I do see the Standard Motor Products voltage regulator changes from a VR1 to a VR8 from 1947 to 1953 Special. So, do check the specifications of both years. I assume it is a 1953 Special, as the other 1953 Buicks were 12 volts!
