A three brush generator has no "voltage regulator", just a cut-out device that disconnects the generator from the battery when the engine is not running. If the cut-out was no tin the circuit, the generator would "motor", i.e. runs like a motor because it is still connected to the battery. Now a diode can be the cut-out, no moving parts like a relay, but still prevents the battery from powering the generator.

Voltage "regulation" is by adjusting the third brush location in respect to another brush, that is what that screw adjustment does inside the generator. I used quotes because it is set for one charging rate, and the voltage will vary with battery condition, engine speed, loads etc.

The two brush generator uses the common voltage regulator with more than one coil inside, typically. A step up in technology from the three brush!

The battery water level has to be monitored more often with the third brush systems as the charging rate is independent of the battery needs.  The battery can be overcharging if the third brush is not set properly.
