MG Paul
Dear members I'm Paul from the Netherlands and as i'm new here I would like to introduce myself. Im a panelbeater from proffesion and im always trying to make something special of a flat sheet. A friend of mine drives pre war MG's and for that reason I do some work in this area in my free time. I don't have an antique car myself yet but meaby in the near future. At this moment im making a brass radiator shell for an Magna f type. To me a challenge to make as working with brass is a new thing I qant to master. But im on the good way and im making good progress. MG Paul
Thank you Zipdang ! A little progress to show. I started on the top piece of the shell. The process starts with a paper pattern and after that cutting out the blanc. Greetings Paul

1937hd45
If we could hop into the time machine and go back to the 1930's would we find that these shells were stamped out, or was there a lot of hand fitting as well? It must be a stressful moment when you hand the finished shell to the chrome platter. Looking forward to your next update. Bob
MG Paul
Hi Bob I have been looking inside an original shell to see if I could find "how it was made back then" I think pressed an some handwork after wards. Greetings Paul
MG Paul
Hi all Today I've welded the seams of the top part of the shell. See the process from tacked to welded, grinded and metalfinisched. It's getting more fun each time now it's looking more and more like a shell. It's not going very quickly because its free time work. Notice the ugly weld on the topside because of the zinc containment ! But also notice the beautiful penetration on the inside! And most important no ounholes in the seam wich is the difficulty in welding brass. Greetings Paul Greetings Paul
46 woodie
Hello Paul, what are you using for wire, is that Silicon Bronze?
MG Paul
Hi 46 woodie As far as I know Silicone bronze has the designation Cusi3 in the Netherlands. What I use is CuSn6. I tried both and the last does it best. Hope this ansers your question. Greetings Paul
1937hd45
Have you tried cutting strip of the brass you have left over and used it for filler rod? Color match would be perfect. Bob
MG Paul
Hi Bob Yes I tried that with gas once but not with tig! I can try that. Do you have experience with doing it this way? Thanks Greetings Paul
46 woodie
Hello Paul, I'm really not that familiar with the welding rod designations of Europe but it looks like what you are using is a mixture of Phosphor Bronze and Tin. I have seen Phosphor Copper filler rod used in AC compressor copper piping. Can't wait to see your final project. I hope you will be able to take some pictures when it comes back from the plating shop. Speaking of plating shops, do you have many in the Netherlands? Many in the US are closing because of environmental issues.
MG Paul
Hi 46 Woodie Thanks for your reply. I hope to find a way to get a better colormatch somehow. Bob mentioned cutting from mothermaterial. I have to try that with tig. In gaswelding it didnt work. I think because of the amount of zinc in it. The alloy rod I use doesnt have this zinc amount. Thats why it flows well and has no pinholes caused by the zinc that gasses while welding. Thes are some issues in welding brass. In the case of my shell the colormatch is not that very important because it will be chrome plated. But if I can find a better match ill use that for shure. Yes there are several company's here that doing chrome plating. But also here rules are getting more and more and that makes it difficult for them. Yes if my end product is good enough it will be chrome plated and you'll see some pictures. Greetings Paul I also can't wait?
