65VerdeGS
Do any of you have tips for restoring the console ashtrays and cigar lighter socket in a First-Gen? The ashtrays were originally chromed. But, after 53 years, those in my '65 the bowls of my ashtrays are rusty and grotty looking . Ditto for the cigar lighter receptacle. Are these reproduced? I believe the front ashtray is larger than the one at the rear of the console facing the back seat. Should I sand down the rusty bits and use silvery spray paint to freshen them up? Last question - what did the original knobs look like that attach to the cigar lighter? The front one in my car was replaced, because it has the Cadillac wreath on its chrome face. What were the originals like?
telriv
The ashtray itself was a silvery color. While the holder for the cigs. was chrome plated. I know exactly what the '63-'64 knobs looked like & I believe '65 was diff. more like the radio knobs if I remember correctly.
DualQuadDave
I have some 65 specific lighters, will dig out a couple for you. Making the lighter work is a whole 'nother issue. PM me your contact info, will talk this weekend and tell you what to look for.
RivNut
There are videos on YouTube that show DIY instructions for zinc plating. That would probably replicate the original finish as closely as possible.
