*SOLD* I don't know why these big, handsome, roadworthy cars keep getting overlooked, but this might be the most sheetmetal  per dollar you can get anywhere. This 1948 Chrysler New Yorker has had just four owners, three of whom are friends of mine and the first was a fellow who kept it for nearly 40 years. It has been restored as needed, but it appears that the interior is almost entirely original and it certainly feels tight and solid the way a good original car should and the body has never been off the frame. The repaint is quite nice with a few signs of age, having been done about 20 years ago, and it's certainly appropriate on the massive sedan--just look at that hood! Chrome and stainless are very good to excellent, with very, very minor pitting on the pot metal but the demerits are pretty minor.

As I mentioned, the interior is mostly original, although I think the dash has been repainted--it's pretty shiny. But the door panels, seat covers, and the headliner are vintage 1948 and simply gorgeous, but the carpets have been surely replaced. Seats are firm, not broken-down, and it appears that everything works except the clock. The radio works and is equipped with a neat little device called Redi-Rad, which fits inline with the antenna feed--tune the radio to 1000 AM and you can plug in your phone or iPod and listen through the radio. I've already ordered one for my '41 Limited. Steering wheel is beautifully finished, gauges have bright faces and even the warning light that blinks above the E-brake works like it should. Trunk is neatly finished with replacement carpet mat and an ancient Denman spare that probably dates to the 1950s.

The 323 cubic inch straight-8 runs beautifully. It was rebuilt in the '80s, but probably doesn't have a lot of miles on it since then. Hit the button and it starts easily and idles smoothly, even when it's cold, and there's no smoke or odd noises. That's thanks to a freshly rebuilt distributor and carburetor. There's a new water pump up front and fresh belts and hoses were done two years ago. It's a bit crusty but you could clean it up pretty easily if that's your thing. The Fluid-Drive transmission works like it should, although you should practice a bit first. New brakes were installed not too long ago and the exhaust system gives it a nice, muted hum that seems appropriate. The undercarriage is original and a bit grungy, but no critical rust or rot and it, too, would clean up pretty well. The wide whites are in good shape but I don't know how old they are, and the big hubcaps and trim rings make this car look like a million bucks.

For $19,900, how can you get more big-league '40s luxury? I can't find any downsides to this car and it makes for a great tour vehicle. Great colors, bulletproof hardware, and everyone will think it cost thousands more than it does. Factory service manual and several boxes of spare parts are included. Thanks for looking!

Countrytravler, I don't think this is the same car. I know three of the four owners and it has always been out east, starting in Virginia then in Ohio with the last three owners.

Not that it really matters, because it just sold in near record time. Perhaps I should have asked more for it as Jake suggests. A heck of a lot of car for the money, that's for sure!
