Very Rare Teens running board accessory

Dodge1934

Recommended Posts

This is a very rare running board cooler that would fit on any wood running board  from about 1900 to 1925.

This is a galvanized metal tank surrounded by a canvas sack that would have held water. The water slowly seeped out of the bag as you travelled down the road wetting the bag. The evaporation as you travelled cooled the water and the tank.

A very cool and rare item. The polar bear logo is in good shape. some of the other lettering is very faded.

I was told it was of the 1912 vintage. I have not been able to confirm this anywhere but the era is certainly correct.

The unit was manufactured in Denver Colorado.

see pictures attached

Price is $500.00 US funds plus shipping

That's one of the coolest things I've seen in a long time....wow....it might be fun to see exactly how much, from an engineering standpoint, you could cool the water, there has to be a maximum delta T for evaporating, and most of the "cold" (not the cool, it's way cool!) would seem to have been on the outside of the bag...fascinating...

I think it is a neat item! The kind of thing I would have loved to have gotten about 40 years ago. But life has not treated me well, and I cannot be buying things I really do not need.

I think it is sad that the hobby doesn't appreciate things like this more. I still have the folding chairs and tables I got many years ago. They date from a similar age, roughly late '10s or '20s. The chairs I have actually have patent dates from the early 1890s on them. I also have a couple early ice chest baskets and early picnic sets that I have had for nearly half a century now. We used to put out a full picnic display at car shows.

Running board mounted accessories themselves would make a wonderful collection. I have a few things. I don't have, but have seen dog/pet carriers that mounted on the running board. Neat stuff!

I agree. Running board items could be a great collection. Hard to find much these days.

Love to see a picture of dog carrier.

Saw an add for an add on tent to a touring car a few years back .my was sold by the time I saw the add.

Very neat item, I saw one at Hershey back in the 1980’s, I don’t remember if it was for sale or just display. I love the obscure stuff!

I wonder if it is too wide for a running board and might better fit the luggage rack on the back?

I am quite sure it was designed for the running board. It may vary by car as running boards were likely different widths.

This unit is only 9 inches deep at the frame. The larger problem is that it tends to block a door from use on many cars

but so do many of the running board mounted accessories,

When I was a kid some summers I would work for my uncle who farmed and ranched up in South Dakota. No cabs or umbrellas in those days. In the morning we would fill a glass Clorox jug wrapped in wetted burlap with a hand pump to carry on the tractor. The thermometer on the North side of the house might say 112 but we could still get a fairly cool drink of water out of it. Worked just like your cooler.
