Exhaust Cutout Dobbins Mfg Indiana Price Reduced

I'm selling a vintage Dobbins Manufacturing Co. exhaust cutout.  It's  for a 2" pipe.  I took it off of my 25 DB roadster.  Works fine.  No issues. Not quite sure what purpose these serve except to make noise but....    $75 plus shipping from CT.

Other than the increased noise, the intended function was to reduce resistance and back pressure in the exhaust system, ostensibly increasing horsepower, fuel economy, and speed

I've heard that back then, drivers used them

sometimes when going up a hill for more power.

Also, if it was a blind hill or a blind curve, the

extra noise would alert other drivers of your

coming car.  On a narrow road, that increased safety.

 

Driving speeds were much slower back then,

of course, and most cars were open, so such a

noise was readily heard.

Model J Duesenberg all have a factory cutout that they called "Country" or "City".   The DuPont had an optional cutout.   Both cars were performance oriented for their time and the cutout adds to that mystique.

Our 1915 Hudson SIX-40 has a factory Cut-Out, and so did our 1914 Buick B-37 Touring. On the Buick, it was actually made as a part of the muffler. Our 1912 Oakland Model 30 also had a Cut-Out.

The Locomobile 1909 Model L also had a cut-out integral with the muffler.

They apparently were an extremely popular aftermarket accessory - easily installed by anyone with a hacksaw in some cases
