bodayguy
Sorry dumb question. I bought a new solenoid - since installing a Pertronix and new high-po coil, the ignition likes to stick a little more often than before and I'm thinking a new solenoid on the starter is due. I just have searched from the view above and the close view below and can't see where the starter motor and solenoid is?? I am guessing it's underneath on the driver side? I have not put the front on jack stands yet, but anyone with some advice would be great. You guys are the best.
JZRIV
Starter is on Left rear under exhaust manifold. Once you have it out you may want to have it checked over by a competent rebuild shop.
Seafoam65
What do you mean when you say the ignition sticks? Please clarify the symptom.
bodayguy
The condition is that when I am starting it, and you turn the key back off before it turns over, the ignition continues to fire despite you turning the key to off.
telriv
The 1st. thing I would check is to LOAD TEST the battery. A weak/failing battery will cause the solenoid to stick. AND, I DON'T CARE IF IT'S NEW. IT CAN BE DEFECTIVE!!!!
bodayguy
Yeah I keep a tender on the battery. It is a 2013 battery and you are quite possible right, it might be too old. The sticking ignition is pretty common for a bad battery, too!
Black River
Mine was doing the same thing. I got a solenoid from NAPA for $15 and bolted it on. No problem after that. I don't know if a '64 starter is like a '63 because of the different transmissions, but I'll tell you a '63 is the heaviest one I've ever pulled out of a car, so be ready when you pull it out of the bellhousing. bodayguy
I think I'm going to go ahead and get a new battery anyhow. that's a lot easier and not too $$

The 63 starter is different only in the length of the nose. The 63 nose has to be longer to reach the starter gear ring. On the 63, the gear ring is part of the torque converter rather than part of the flex plate as found on most other cars. And, yes it is heavy. bodayguy
The new battery helped a lot. I could tell immediately it was getting more juice to the starter. Holding off on the solenoid unless it acts up. Thanks gang.
telriv
I have Mini-Starters in stock for '64-'66. 6lbs. 12ozs. I build older starters on an as needed basis. Tom T.
