Chavis garage

Recommended Posts

This is the reason why I had to take a brief hiatus from my car.  I am redoing my garage.  Nothing special, it's just a little one car garage that has been needing some TLC ever since we moved in almost 10 years ago.  I hope this will take no longer than a month, but nothing much really goes according to plan.  I might have some questions dealing with lighting.  I know you all got my back.  I will provide pictures as I go along.

So here's a few shots of my garage. Yesterday was the first day and I spent that trying to move stuff out of the way to clear it out.  A shot from the outside.20170422_173816.thumb.jpg.732cd88ce2563f98161dddf189786c23.jpgA shot of one of the corners of the garage right at the bigger entrance.  Here is one of the many holes in my garage walls.  This is where I will add an electrical outlet with a new shelving unit.20170422_173848.thumb.jpg.3d1c154f26ce44549f0d1b99e9586be8.jpgMore shots with this one looking at the entrance to my kitchen.20170422_173857.thumb.jpg.d15a0de6b9da01ac48d41d67384bf848.jpgLooking at the backyard entrance and window.20170422_173906.thumb.jpg.1440863cbcc5afc48cbbc592a76a6067.jpgShot taken from rear of garage looking at front corner of garage.20170422_173923.thumb.jpg.a41088f7c2022e51c1d85953a861f55b.jpgShot from rear of garage looking at kitchen entrance.20170422_173936.thumb.jpg.a5dc9c52cb723cd0dfe9423336d7b7f2.jpgShot from middle of garage, looking at rear.  Washer and dryer area.20170422_173957.thumb.jpg.bf8a4a1cf59f95f8db1b9c8c33c600e1.jpgShot from middle of garage, looking at rear.  Work bench area.  Yes, this is my only real work light.20170422_174008.thumb.jpg.c37f265fb0bc9f87757fef9c437ce6c4.jpgJust a shot of one of the many holes in my garage.20170422_174020.thumb.jpg.3f904b64174599b36c8fc61295f07e89.jpgFinally, a shot the ceiling.  This is the only general lighting I have in here and it's surrounded by a bunch of holes.20170422_174035.thumb.jpg.bbd89fa6857e5c01b648e2f25d71b5d1.jpgToday,  I hope to have this garage mostly cleared with exception to a few things.  I still have all kinds of Buick parts to move out of my way.

Cleared  the garage out as planned.  All Buick parts were moved along with most of my tools and other miscellaneous things.  Got a nice workout going up and down a ladder all day long.  Here's some shots of the garage after clearing out.20170423_163917.thumb.jpg.ebe23998b8f04d7c03b24801c0560f72.jpgI made exception for the evaporator boxes.  I refused to move those things around.  Anyway, the shelving unit is mostly clear.20170423_163958.thumb.jpg.ef2325a54182890058955f490a2be51b.jpgWork bench is now practically naked.20170423_164744.thumb.jpg.8d7f5758300bd937b0b42f56ee28a342.jpgSome of the few things I had to keep in the garage.  Fortunately, they all have wheels.20170423_182820.thumb.jpg.64ad422e3ab35a16be9a320defe07ecd.jpgAnother Buick item I just refused to move...the front seat.  I will cover anx work around it.20170423_182830.thumb.jpg.96120e57c673961eef46b83d9ddeb672.jpgNext weekend, the goal is to remove all drywall and possibly add a few electrical outlets.  See you then.

Removing drywall?Why!?!?

Hey Mr Lamar.  Yeah, I need to replace the drywall.  There's holes holes all over the place and the previous drywall job was done terribly.  I also want to insulate the walls and add some electrical outlets while I have everything exposed.

I built those hanging shelves and my work bench about 6 years ago.  This was done before I found my Buick.  It has served its purpose very well.  Thank you.

Got some work done to the garage over the weekend.  Time to pull all the drywall down.  First, I needed to unmount the work bench from the wall.20170428_171949.thumb.jpg.40419fbf67c07fc733f1b536f907759b.jpgI also removed window and door trim which will be replaced because it's so dry rotted.  Then came the filthy work of tearing out drywall.  Here's a few shots of the progress.20170429_184351.thumb.jpg.609375415a9f9c6f93af4d67e3653237.jpg20170429_184341.thumb.jpg.19548bd74959ac246cbac3922c20b977.jpg20170429_184431.thumb.jpg.d2f344aa71f68c01c3badd3a4e276900.jpg20170429_184445.thumb.jpg.7b7c3bef2b986b02ab9e9dddf2d06f47.jpgSince taking these photos, I have removed more drywall which includes most of the ceiling.  It was just too dark to take pictures.  I will post those tomorrow.

I figured these lights (or something close to this could be installed on the ceiling of the garage and serve as general lighting.  But my wife wants a separate set of lighting for her washer /dryer area shown here...20170429_184351.thumb.jpg.e1e29fed731794b7f02d42467714cdf3.jpgI was thinking something like a couple wall-mounted lights mounted directly above the washer and dryer.  Please share your opinions.  Finally, I want to mount some lights directly underneath the shelving unit shown here...20170429_184341.thumb.jpg.98d60ef76e318b835a428aee0a05a591.jpgand here...20170429_184431.thumb.jpg.8b2ad949d943f6bfbe59b11bf42e17d8.jpgShould I use the same type of lights that I would use on the garage ceiling or something else?  Again, I would appreciate some opinions.  Each set of lights (laundry area, general, and under shelving) would have its own dedicated light switch.  I appreciate any suggestions.

I noticed this search turned up 600 results!  KC, I don't know about you but this is my problem in trying to decide on lighting.  LEDs seem to be the way to go.  But my help ends there.

Home Depot has a high bay light, about 15000 lumens for about $160.  I have not made any choices for my shop yet - mostly because there's about 600 choices out there and I know next to nothing about any of them.

It seems that no matter how well-lit my current shop is, I still have my untrusty trouble light plugged in and it never fails to live up to its name!

Good luck!

This weekend's work on the garage was abbreviated.  I had some other small things that needed to be tended to.  I was able to remove the last of the drywall in the shelving unit.20170507_175442.thumb.jpg.40b75d709534e9d71606e67b2cc63b1f.jpg20170507_175454.thumb.jpg.c629cc1d272eedc0a2edc2675949ae4f.jpgGot a couple of questions for you guys.  I will post it later today.

So the question is this...the current wires used for my outlets shown here...20170508_192018.thumb.jpg.c9dfec14477201f99cc2edd6b4a1bac7.jpgare 14 gage wire.  Should I stick with the 14 gage, or should I upgrade to 12 gage?  Are 14 gage wires adequate enough to safely service an outlet that will have a heavy duty power tool plugged up to it (such as an air compressor)?  Thank you.

What amp breakers are on those 14 gauge wires, probably 15? You may want to consider going with 12 gauge and 20 amp. Regarding air compressors, most are 220 V and will require a dedicated line and breaker.

... and if you have extra room on your electrical panel, I would add additional breakers so you can add as many outlets as possible (1 every 6-feet or so).  Lighting, I would go with LED, you have many many cheap options (check Costco for specials), but the extra outlets will allow you to add focus lighting where you need it as time goes on. You can also add fixtures directly over the work bench and laundry areas, either on the ceiling or wall mounted. I would also make sure your main garage lights are set up with 3-way switches, so you can turn lights on/off at the garage door as well as the kitchen door. I didn't do this and regret it every time I enter the garage through the garage door.

Right now I only have 4 electrical outlets in the garage.  I plan on adding 4 more outlets.  It sounds like everyone agrees that I should upgrade my wiring to 12 gage with 20 amp breakers...so that's what I will do.  In the picture shown below...20170422_173848.thumb.jpg.71bcb2598c4ac5c3cc690b0ce5db209c.jpgI plan on moving my air compressor here.  A new outlet will be installed here and this outlet will have its own dedicated electrical line and breaker.  I will also build a new shelving unit in this same corner.

The other 3 new outlets will be jumped off of existing outlets.  Still deliberating on lights, but I am going to take everyone's advice and go LED.

Does this sound right so far?  Thank you.

I don't want to post anything troublesome in public forum.  I encourage you to read the building code, even if you're not permitting, at least for any future resale or insurance inspections. Virginia being a commonwealth sometimes has some weird add-ons to nationally accepted practice.

What Matt said. Curl up with an Electrical DIY book for a couple of nights. Depending on where your main panel is and how much of it is being used, you may even want to consider running a 60 or 100 amp line to your garage, then take off from it with conduit to wherever you need lights and receptacles.

Is this something that's available online?  I am looking, but with little luck. Thank you.

I hate referring anyone to another forum, but any question you have about garage electrical has probably already been answered or can be answered here.

  • 3 weeks later...

Need your opinions again.  My wife hates the idea of strip commercial lighting in the garage.  Does anyone have an opinion of recessed lighting in a garage?  I would do bright LED bulbs, but want to install enough to get good lighting.  Thank you.

Wife and I just purchased the new washer and dryer today.  They will be delivered in 2 weeks.  We also looked at a set of cabinets for my wife's laundry area.  Still undecided on a set of lights. We looked at strip lighting and recessed lighting.  While the LED recessed lighting was bright as the sun, they were more expensive than the strip lighting.  So, we are leaning towards purchasing the strip lighting.  The jury is still out on this one. Work continues tomorrow.

The recessed will require more fixture for the same area....
