What is it? Heavy chrome emblem, I would guess  mid to late '40's. Covers what?????

This looks like something that is 'after-market' to me.  I would say Pontiac, but, the shape of the Chief's head is not consistent with what Pontiac would have produced.

Why does it look as tho I am seeing two different emblems here?  The  first does not appear to have the curved, pryamid shaped feature on the top?

 

Agree aftermarket because of poor quality Indian head.

 

Initial thought was fender skirt, but not with that peak.  I now am thinking goes on rear fender, above tail lamp to give the car a "Cadillac style" peak?

hello, it is a front or rear pontiac bumper accessory, they had these in different styles for about ten years starting in the mid 1930's, it has the correct pontiac chief head styling of those years.
