My Pontiac belt is .6875" wide, the pulley on my alternator is 2.5" and the outside diameter of where the belt runs is 2.25.  I wore out my original style belt that was already ten years old. Could not find another so now have been running a notched belt for 180,000+ miles and have had no troubles.  I worried about the small pulley at first but I needed it to get the speed of the alternator up.

1939 Commander belt is 44.5" IC, 47.2" OC, 23/32" top, 42° by one supplier or maker. Dunlop says its V50 belt fits: 44-1/32 x 25/32 x 13/32 - 40°. The first number is IC, inside circumference.

www.Gates.com lookup by application comes up with TR24461, which is 36°, 46.58" OC, top 0.656 (17 mm), section TA, which is a bit narrower.

spinney...its odd....gates says its 17mm wide which is about 5/8".   All the suppliers say it is 3/4"  wide.  I may have to check with gates on this.

see the suppliers....

Tinindian...i agree it should be a notched belt especially around 2.5" dia.....glad to hear someone else experience what I did and it wasn't just me.

Hmmm. Same belt, aftermarket sales give different dimensions to the OEM! 17 mm is a tad smaller than 11/16". Original belts were not notched of course.

Gates said that belt is 5/8" (17 mm) wide and they have no control of the description after it leaves their facility.   So that answers the question... that the 5/8" wide belt is the replacement belt.   At any rate, I order the 3/4 " wide alternator pulley.  After mounting the alternator, I will get my local NAPA dealer to source a 3/4" wide belt with the new length.  (I dont like the way the 5/8" belt sits deeper in the pulley!)

I just finished installing and testing the 6 volt alternator.   Made my own mounting bracket, bought the 12 volt alternator, a wide pulley, a 6 volt internal self exciting regulator, and a new v-belt.   I put the 6 volt regulator in the alternator and the 11/16" wide v belt fits well.  The belt is cogged on the bottom and notched on the top...making it able to go around the 2.5" alt pulley without any effort.   Cranked her up and she is charging with only the one wire attached.   Another item to check off the list !!!

dont pay any attention to the temp wires...all that will get cleaned up.   The yellow wire was to get the excitation started...once removed, only the battery wire was connected.
