Entry Alert, (drivway alarm)

Recommended Posts

I have been looking for an entry alarm that could be used out doors that has a beam that would be broken and send an electrical signal

to the house to a beeper of some sort.

Similar to what I used to have at the door of my store.

They all seem to be wireless these days and require batteries.

I have power and some pairs of wires buried but don't find just what I am looking for.

I did buy a system that works pretty well that has a solar powered sender and a plug in receiver and it will trigger when a large car passes it. But is a bit weak when it comes to smaller cars and doesn't work when people walk thru.

Any ideas?

Jack, below is a link to a company called Dakota Alert. I have used their driveway alarms at 4 different properties, including my current residence and have been/am well pleased. If somebody comes in your driveway, you'll know it.

Thanks 31, but I see that this stuff is wireless.

I am trying to put something together that doesn't need batteries.

I actually found one with a Google search the other day, I hope I can find it again.

I moved the solar powered sender the other day and it is working better.

I would love to have a dog or a flock of geese, but I am on the go so much I really cant maintain pets anymore.

Our Drive way is 1/5 mile long.  Next to the  black top there is a sensor that detects a metal mass as it passes within a near proximity.   Currently this is used to actuate a old time semaphore. This system can also be used to alert us in the house of any and all vehicles that come down the drive.

Well I looked at the offerings on the link and what I saw clearly was plugged/hardwired into a 110V source?

I see that now in this link, but its also a vehicle sensor. That is what I have only the sensor is solar.

It works most of the time.

But I am wanting a beam so I can tell if someone or their dog walks in. My kids live next door and I like a little warning.

Thanks for the link, I will look further on that site for what I need when I get a little time.

Jack, if you live rural at all , the beam is not what you want. Too much wild life. You will get weary of it going off all the time. It is amazing how many critters are out there.

What you really want to know is who is coming down your drive and what are their intentions.

I have a Mighty Mule Wireless Driveway Alarm, around $60 on Amazon. It is a proximity type with a probe buried beside the drive. It does take a 9 volt battery but has lasted over a year so far. I have had the optical and they even triggered in high winds when trees moved. I like the MM but it occasionally doesn't go off and it doesn't make sense to me. It will trigger when I drive the rider mower down the drive and it has a plastic body so the steel is minimal, then sometimes the UPS truck doesn't trigger it on the way in but does on the way out.

Jim, This is my experience exactly.

Curti, Some wild life here but not so much that it would bother me I don't think.

I had a battery powered set up here a few years ago and it seemed to always be needing batteries.

The youngsters that live behind me used to walk thru the yard at 7:30 AM to catch the school bus.

They would watch for the bus go by their place and when it went by they would cut thru my place so their ride was shorter. By about 5 minutes.

I kind of miss that wake up call.

Those kids grew older and started terrorizing the hood with some Jap tuner thing.

I had a nice little talk with them and it seemed to work.

I told the that if they showed me a little respect while I had my talk they could call me anything they want after I leave and I cant hear them.

Of coarse they had to remind me that I was a bit of an outlaw myself.

HA !!

The Dakota Alert model that I use has a small unit with the chime, etc inside it  that is plugged into an outlet inside the house. The "sensor" ( or whatever the heck it is) is in another plastic box that is screwed to a tree beside the driveway. There is one 9 volt battery in this box. It requires replacement maybe once every 6 months, if that. The chime sounds when anything breaks the beam of the sensor including vehicles, people, walking geese, deer, squirrels ( you get the idea) or blowing leaves.

I use this small wireless zwave sensor ( http://www.zwaveproducts.com/shop/z-wave-security/motion-detectors-and-sensors/z-wave-motion-detector-w-pet-immunity ).

It has the ability to set the sensitivity to "pet" mode which eliminates the sensor going off for most things small than about 60 lbs.

When the sensor triggers I get both an email and a notification on my phone.

It is battery powered but I am still on the original battery at almost 18 months. - Bob

Here's a couple hard wired units if you really want that.

I've been using this unit for 13 years and no problems no matter what the season. Using Lithium batteries they last a minimum of 2 years and sometimes 3 years. This unit has great range also. I have two of them spaced about 75 feet apart on my 300' drive. This way when they go off in succession we know its a visitor and not deer.......and how fast someone is coming by how close together the tones are. Stayed away from metal detection only units as we want to know when someone is walking.

I've got one of these by the gate. Works fine and with a two coupons, one you get 20% off and  the second coupon a free flashlight.

Battery for the sensing eye has lasted more than a year.
