mikewest
Why does anyone want these old titles or registrations without the car??? Please tell me. Its so easy to register a car today without any previous paperwork.
Povertycove
I've asked myself this question so many times, Mike. Is there a reason to buy old registrations? There seems to be a dark side to this.
mikewest
The DARK SIDE is FRAUD. People buy them and register a car the same year and model as they have when they don't have papers. The kicker is like in NYS , every year a new registration card is issued and there are chances that another car is "out there" already licensed with those same #s. Its foolish to pay that money for a old document and take the chance of trouble. I know of an example where a collector changed the #s on his car to match the old papers he bought only have the DMV alert the police that either his car or the other one that showed on their computer was a fraud. Povertycove
Ah, thanks Mike. I suspected something like this. It goes state-by-state. In Florida, to get a car from out-of-state registered, an officer from the sheriffs office comes by to check VIN. We're used to crooks in Florida. In Maine-- not so used to crooks-- registration is a lot easier. Thanks for the explanation.
mikewest
In NY , without any paperwork , if you have had the car in your possession 12 months or more ,you will be given a temp. registration. After several weeks you get in the mail permanent papers if no problem is found . Very easy and cheaper that what some of these advertisers want for old obsolete papers.
