Guest 1946Lincoln
Not sure if you got what you needed, but you can go to Boos-Herrel and download their PDF that includes most of the cars diagrams.. Jim
Ray500
The steering lock is operated by the ignition and there's a 'cam' that comes out of the lock mechanism and engages the steering shaft that has an index to lock the steering wheel when the key is off and removed. If the lock is engaged the steering wheel will move slightly either direction until the indent in the shaft lines up with the locking cam, the the wheel is locked and can't be turned. If this isn't working on your car it might be in the mechanism which you can remove and check it out. There is the ignition switch on top of the locking mechanism which is operated by the key in order to start the car and power the gauges. I found it was easier to work on this part with the speedometer removed, but that's a big job too, so you can remove the mechanism without removing the instrument cluster. Do this with the battery disconnected! There are parts around to fix whatever is broken, but you'll need to remove it first to see what the problem is. With the ignition removed, you can work the lock and see if the cam is being deployed on the side of the unit when you operate the key. If that's OK you have to look in the side of the steering column and make sure the indent is lines up on the steering wheel shaft so you can engage the locking cam. Good Luck!
