petelempert
When I pulled the seatbelts out of my 63, I noticed that the buckles were on the outboard side of the seat (by door sill) and the tongues were next to the console. This seems weird to me. All the other 60/70's cars I've worked on have the buckles on the inside and tongues by the sill. Is this a Riviera thing, did somebody do it backwards? Not even sure if these belts were factory installed. Who knows want a dealer might have done. Any thoughts? PRL
Seafoam65
Pete, somebody installed them incorrectly. The reason that the non adjustable side of the belt is always on the outsideis that the outside belt needs a retractor to prevent the belt from accidentally being destroyed by slamming the door shut on it, and it isn't possible to install a retractor on the side that is adjustable due to the flap of extra length of the belt that hangs down from the buckle, plus if you were to install a retractor on the console side of the belt with the belts installed like your car was, the belt would disappear between the seat and the console and you couldn't reach in to pull it up.
