aussiecowboy
Does anyone know a source for thermostats for 29/30 engines? I've been unsuccessful in my search.

Guest
I use a modern 195 degree stat. Many years ago I found a washer (maybe out of a transmission or differential) that had the od of the original stat and an id that just allows the newer stat to slide in but not through. In fact if you have the original stat the flat part that goes between the thermostat housing and the outlet to the hose might be exactly the right size if you remove the bellows etc. Good luck. aussiecowboy
I was hoping you'd see this one mate. That's an idea, I might machine up an adapter piece to use a modern thermostat.
32Pontiac6
The parts book shows that the thermostat has the same part number from 28-32 for 6's.
Guest
Absolutely it does. This thermostat is rare because these are the only cars it fits. Instead of being round and just fitting inside the housing it has an oval shaped base with two holes (for the mounting bolts) and is installed between the water outlet manifold and the water outlet elbow with a gasket on each side. I have never seen one except for the original one that was in my car. Edited March 4, 2016 by Guest (see edit history)

Guest
For those who have not seen a split head Pontiac thermostat or housing I am attaching a copy from "Pontiac Six Parts Repair List" The water manifold "1" attaches to both heads. The gasket "2" goes onto the housing then the thermostat "6", then a second gasket "2" and finally the outlet elbow "3". As I stated in an earlier post I have never seen a NOS thermostat or even another used one other than the one in my car and I have been searching for one for 57 years. aussiecowboy
I've pulled a few out of parts car engines but never one good enough to use, I've been searching for a NOS one also, not for anywhere near as long as you but for a number of years, no luck at all. Guest
The nice thing about it though is that the lack of one does not prevent one from enjoying driving the Pontiacs. Of course they did not even use a thermostat until they went to the cross flow radiator. We are into spring (daffodils, tulips, crocus and ornamental cherry trees out in full bloom) just as you slip into fall down under.Happy motoring. 32Pontiac6
At least what remains of one... I will have to post a picture of my replacement one and how it adapts to the distribution pipe. Also...if this in any way helps aussiecowboy my fee is a ride in his tank if I am ever in the land down under... 32Pontiac6
In going through some spare parts I acquired with the purchase of my 1930 Pontiac I found an original one.
