Rocker Molding ID Help Needed

Recommended Posts

I unwrapped a pair of rocker panel molding from their original cardboard wrapper today and at a loss to figure out what they fit. They are 2" wide and 61 1/2 inches long. One end is rounded and finished. The other looks like it connected to a trim extension. One has a bit of a bow from storage but no kinks of scratches.

I'm planning to sell them so if the get ID'ed I'll make a $15 contribution to the AACA Library.

Due to the shape of the ends,  neither being curved makes me wonder if this might not be a wide fender molding.  late 50's FOMOCO product came to mind but it may be a tad too wide for that.  It's very similar in shape to this 1958 Monterey molding.  The unfinished end looks like it would attach to possibly a diecast molding. the other end at a door.  whther it be for a 1/4 or a fender who knows.  Just my 2 cents of course.

Wow! That's a "Watch me pull a rabit out of a hat" thing.

I thing you got it: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nice-1957-Mercury-front-fender-moldings-/191792969912?hash=item2ca7c078b8:g:a0UAAOSwGotWqEup&vxp=mtr

I got rocker panel molding stuck in my head and couldn't get past it. You done good. And the AACA library just got a few bucks. Every little bit helps.

Bernie, There should be a part number printed on the old wrapping paper. With # we'll figure it out pretty quick and accurate.

The Merc looks close but the detail esp. down the center of the strips doesn't quite match up.

The paper should have the number but could be faded to oblivion.

I only suggested FOMOCO because of the shape and style with the 58 Merc as an example because of the similarity.  I didn't think it was an exact match,  just down the right path maybe.  A number would definitely make it real easy but after seeing the condition of that wrapper I doubt there will be much of a number left.  I hope there is though.  I will say that I see rust on that stainless molding which also makes me think Ford as I have had more than one 50's era Ford stainless molding that had rust pits in it.  Must have been a poorly mixed batch of stainless. Hopefully we are on the right track.

Thanks, being on the right track helps. . The only thing identifiable on the wrapped was a large silky spider web and two stink bugs. Knowing they are front fender moldings. At least I got to sniff around where the value stands. That gets back to that old Ebay problem again. Similar trim strips have a value of about $60/pr. and about $15 shipping in a piece of PVC pipe. That's $6 for Ebay, about $2.02 for Paypal, a trip to get PVC (a few bucks), and a trip to the post office; I end up sending out parts with a couple of rust boogers, even if I point them out, that a buyer will open a case over.

The listing, above trips, and taking better picture will eat up between an hour and two. And I am supposed to be doing my REAL job right now. I just sent out the $120 check for the storage unit where parts for sale go. I think a plan to avoid spending $1440 this year is taking shape.

Thanks, Bernie

I know where you are coming from.  I have a storage unit with a whole bunch of NOS trim.  Even the stuff I could ID is just not worth the hassle.   I've gotten to the point where I hate trim.  Unless it's super nice die cast with near perfect plating I pass on it.  I would sell all mine for 1.00 a piece in bulk I think.  I even have a bunch of Wheel well moldings that I have never even looked at.  Some are still boxed in the boxes they were sent to me in.

My second problem is I'm actually foolish enough to run a piece of trim once in a while.  Usually when I do it gets fully polished first to show quality.  Then sells for 20 -30.00.  not a good deal when it took you 1- 3 hours to polish a 3 foot piece of trim to near perfection.  Don't forget all those fees as well.  I think the problem with stainless is people think, well i can polish it,  when they get around to restoring their car.  Not realizing the work it takes to straighten and polish a piece of trim.
