Hans1965
Dear all,I just recently purchased a '50 Cadillac Club Coupe with a dark grey roof and a light grey body. The roof definitely needs some attention, it needs a paint job for sure. Then my trouble begun. I googled the car and found the two cars I have attached. One day I think I keep the old color and the next I think, hey, this shiny red paint is just perfect. Day 3 tells me I should keep it original, the day after I want to do the red roof and change to the red wheels with the smaller hub caps and the 'beauty rings'. Day 5.....Man, it is hard to decide these not really important things in life. Any advice on the car and my mental situation? ;-)Best,Hans
Linus Tremaine
If I wanted a two tone car, I would look through some factory sales literature and choose a color combination that was offered by the factory. They had some wonderful color schemes and the paint color choices suited the car. I will add that cadillacs were not built to be hot rods. They are (or at least were at some point) cars of elegance. Red wheels and beauty rings do not fit the character of the car or its design purpose. Anyone can do as they wish with their car, but I advise that people not try to make their cars into something that they aren't. 36 D2 Coupe
Linus has a good point. Have a look for factory correct colour combos - the maroon over grey could be an option. We once had a '59 Canadian Dodge Mayfair with a maroon roof and pink body - correct factory colours - sure was different and couldn't lose it in a parking lot
oldcar
Just think how the car looked when it left the showroom floor. You cannot improve on perfection. Bj
Hans1965
Hi guys, thanks for your opinions which is very much in line with the one of my twin brother. But then.... I asked the most important woman of my life - my mom. I told her before that her opinion would be the decisive one. She saw the two pictures and instantly tipped on the red roof... . Roger Zimmermann
I would go with the dark red roof too. However, imagine for one second that the car with the red roof is in the poor condition like on your second picture but the one with the gray roof in a perfect condition...Something again to think!
Hans1965
Roger, you do not really make my life easier. Thanks so much! ;-)Another thought that is bothering me is that I do have already original and elegant and classy cars. Why not making this one a bit different while retaining its beauty. The dark/light grey one has great character and is showing well that this body design is a hot rod in itself with no need to make it look hotter. It is hot like a vulcano. PONTIAC1953
hi hans, you didn't tell us what the colors are in the interior of the car, what colors are the seats ?, one thing i love about GM cars of the 1950's is the harmonizing of the inside and outside colors, my 1953 pontiac chieftain custom catalina is a prime example, outside it's laurel green roof over a milano ivory body, inside the seats, the door and rear side panels are all two tone in almost exactly the same colors. charles l. coker1953 pontiac tech advisortech advisor coordinatorpoci
Hans1965
Hi Charles, I am happy to tell you. While the outside paint is in vista gray metallic (upper) and French gray (lower) the interior is also two tone in gray cloth. So it matches perfectly to how it is on in the outsight - now. Another point to consider, absolutely right. The interior is so different from my Roadmaster's and 56 CdV, which are so colorful. Before I bought the '50 I knew the interior of these early 50s Cads only from pictures and I had doubts that I would like it but when I entered the car and sat in front of the the steering wheel I thought 'wow, that is in its simplicity really stylish and just breathtaking beautiful.' The stunning thing on my car is that the interior really looks like new. It was like a time machine. The dashboard has no signs of aging, the door panels are like new etc etc.You may notice I am still overwhelmed! But coming back to the initial question, to make the roof red would somehow disturb the current looks. This process of making my mind up is really difficult. But I have time.By the way the early 50s Pontiacs are just fantastic, inside and outside. The waterfall stripes, the Indian head, the huge clock and speaker unit in the center of the dashboard, very beautiful design. My desire for these early 50s GM cars started with Pontiacs. My all time favourite is the 52 Catalina modell with the double speer on the side. I had once the chance to buy one in Europe, but I was absolutely unexperienced (even more than now) and was afraid of buying something that I cannot cope with. Since years I am looking for such a car and cannot find one again. I guess that is a typical suffering after having missed a chance. Charles, thanks for your new thought on my problem. Appreciate that.Best, Hans
Akstraw
The gray with red roof combination looks striking to me. It looks "period correct", whether it is factory correct or not, and seems appropriate to a Cadillac, while adding a little spice over the all-gray option. Bottom line, though, go with the color you like the best; the one you'll be most proud to drive around, take to shows, and show your friends. Hans1965
Akstraw, thanks for your advice, too. I am still a bit 'undecided', but most of the time I think I go for the 'spicy' option. And if I do not like if after some time, hey, there are people around who can spray it over again.
