47windsor
48 Fluid drive, Some time ago i was going thru some problems of the transmission shifting down when I came to a stop. since that time I changed from electronic ignition back to points & condensor.. I have gone thru all the electrical tests & from that point all seems well. I have checked the rpm & set it at 450 when the car is warm & sitting in forward gear. When I take the car out it operates perfectly for about ten minuets but then it does not shift down when coming to a full stop. I have tried the kick down & that is working ok. The only thing I haven't done is clean the governor points. If it is shifting down for the first ten min could that still be the governor in need of cleaning?? I would appreciate your comments Bruce Watson
Rusty_OToole
Sounds like a classic case of dirty governor points.Go easy, they are soft silver. Use contact cleaner or brake kleen spray and blow clean with compressed air (not too hard). Drag a folded piece of white typing paper between the contacts until it comes out clean. Should be done every 10 - 20 or 50 years lol. Could also be a loose or frayed wire making intermittent contact. You should notice when you are under the car. 47windsor
Rusty, Thank you for your reply , once my garage warms up again I will get out there & clean the points on the governor, I live just north of The US border in B.C. Canada & we are having a week or so of below freezing temperatures so look forward to the warmer weather. Thanks again Bruce
