Chevy 216 or 235

I will apologize in advance for asking a question that I used to know and one that has been discussed before. (tried the search function).

What are the external differences to determine a 216 or 235 engine? I know there are some

small differences that you can tell by looking. Can't remember.

Is there a website or database to run numbers to determine the year?

Thanks,

Dennis

There is a number stamped on the passenger side of the block near the distributor base. Post it here some one will be able to identify it. If it has a four bolt valve cover it's not a 216. If it has a short side cover it's not a 216. There are other ways to tell but I don't have them off the top of my head.

Thanks guys,

C9

That's the info. I was trying to remember.

Beltfed,

That's a great site but has led to another question.

After visiting the site, it appears that they also made babbitted 235's. I was not aware of this. I wonder what year

they started with inserts. Were the babbitted 235 engines pressure or splasher?

Thanks again,

Dennis.
