MrEarl's Old Buick Barn

Recommended Posts

As some of you may know,  I have been working on building a new garage since my retirement a couple of years ago. I have been spending ALL my time on it, it is going sooooooo sloooowwwww and I feel I have been neglecting all my fitty fo's and even my old faithful first Buick Barn. To ease my conscience a bit, I thought I would share some pictures and a few comments on my "Old Buick Barn".

After Rita and I completed building our house back in '87, I set about building my "get away". (This was before the term "Man Cave" ever came into use, but I never use that term even today) I ran 100 amps electric along with telephone, cable and security down from the house. Prices on cedar were good in those days so I used cedar on the siding and the interior walls. I had salvaged some 2 X 8 and 2 X 10 fir from a lumber company that was being torn down and most of the framing is built from it. It had been brought in from the west back in the early twenties. I loved working with that wood. I had help with the concrete slab but other than that did all the work by myself. A few years after the initial build I enclosed the lower side so as to make more room for compressor, sandblasting, grinding and other dirty jobs that I don't want in the "car room".

Looking back and seeing how much full time work I am spending on the new garage, I wonder how the heck I ever built the old one while working a full time job and spending time with family.

So here below are a few of my favorite pictures, some of which are pretty old and some of the Buicks have gone on down Buick Highway.......

Edit, just ran down and took this picture of what I call my Sunrise/Sunset. I started it at sunrise one day and finished at sunset. Seeing sparks when the hammer hits the nailhead was always my sign to put away the tools for the day.  I think the cedar has weathered beautifully.

What a great building, Lamar. I can't decide if the time goes faster, or do we just get slower? It seems like the former, to me.

 Keith

Thanks for the compliment Keith.

I really don't think I have slowed down a lot maybe, 5-10% at the most and for that I thank God.  I do find myself looking for "stuff" a lot and getting to the barn and asking myself WTF did I come down here after and as soon as I get back to the house it dawns on me. But yea, life is like a roll of toilet paper, the closer to the end it gets the faster it goes. I've just got so much I want to get done before see this

Here's Ed's WAG* for the day.  Hook a chain or rope to the hinged part and lift logs with it; the pressure applied by the lifting force would bury the points into the log and up and away you'd go.  Are there any abandoned logging mills close to Mr. Earl's Old Buick Barn?

In fact there was an abandoned sawmill about 10 miles from the house, up until about 2 years ago. Someone bought it and advertised some gorgeous sawmill cypress beveled siding for sale on CL. It had been stacked with sticks for at least 30 years.  I bought every piece he had and am putting it on my new garage.

Very well done.

Thanks alsancle. and pardon my ignorance but what is that car in your avatar, love the color.

great place there Mr. Earl

Thanks Gary, I've enjoyed it over the years

MrEarl, Looks like Pioneer CS-99A 100watt speakers. I brought back the exact same ones from my Westpac/Tonkin Gulf tour in 1971, purchashed in Yokosuka Japan and they will blow the roof off if I crank them up.. Still just as clear as the day I bought them.. Tom

Ha, spot on Tom. I got mine while on R&R in Tokyo in 1971. Mated with a Pioneer SX 770. Gave it and a set of CS77A Pioneer speakers and turntable to my son about 6-7 years ago, plus bought the same Pioneer set-up for my daughter. At that time I upgraded to a Pioneer SX1250 amp and same CS 99A speakers. Talk about blowing the roof off with old vinyl at that...

A little story goes with the original Pioneer system I bought. We were on a LST headed back to Okinawa, had all the Pioneer gear in boxes strapped down to spare bunks in the sleeping births. Got to Okinawa to disembark, lifted the receiver box, thought it felt light, lifted the speaker box, knew something was wrong. Turns out the swabbies had relieved me and a couple other Marines of all our stereo gear at some time during the cruise home. SOB'S

What more does Buttercup need to be reassembled?

I guess for her owner to re-prioritize a few projects JD

Chris, Mother Nature will probably eventually disassemble her  but I hope it is long after I am gone. She is starting to need some tin nailed back down and the cedar siding sealed etc, but like the old song......Ain't got time to fix the shingles, ain't got time to fix the floor, ain't got time to oil the hinges, nor to mend the window panes.....

Here's a few more recent shots

A small time movie producer filmed a short movie over the course of a couple of weeks around the barn and Buick Pond. It was a comedy set during the time of prohibition and involved the head of a lawman being "fished" from a pond. They are still working on it and expect it to be completed this spring.
