RivNut
It's been a number of years since I last owned a Riviera from the 79 - 85 generation but if my memory serves me right, the 325 three speed from the earlier models is a basic three speed automatic transmission. The 325-4L on the other hand is an overdrive transmission is electronic w/ lock up converter that is controlled via a computer. They will physically interchange, but the 325-4L may require some additional engineering to operate correctly. Both transmissions are front wheel drive applications of the TH200 and TH200-4R for rear wheel drive applications. If you need to upgrade your 325 and 325-4L then the TH200 and TH200-4R should be interchangeable respectively. I've not personally experienced this but in researching putting a TH200-4R behind a nailhead, I ran into these comparisons quite often. I'm in a classroom right now giving a test so I don't have access to my files to confirm this. Do some research on your own. Ed
