Hello,

Back for some help.  I recently parted out a 1971 Cutlass Supreme and was surprised to find a 41 tooth 8.2 inch ring gear.   The overall ratio was 2.56.  I wanted to use a housing with a 8.5 ring gear in my 1966 442 but am not sure the one I pulled from the 71 Cutlass will work.  Here are all the numbers I could find on the parts:

Axle center section: 1235197, 13, CFD and either a backwards C or sideways U.

Axle Tube: R2 B139 1

Carrier 494

Bearing caps: 152

If anyone can identify what this axle assembly is I would really appreciate it.

Thank You.

Larry

Additional Information:

Pinion Length=8.75 inches

Pinion diameter measured just above big bearing=1.625 inches.  8.2 diameter should be 1.435

Ring gear bolts=left hand thread and measure.4375 inches  8.2 should be right hand thread and .375 inches

Housing depth, snout on floor to back of housing (no cover)=approximately 12 inches

16 tooth pinion gear has #1234770 and letter H

41 tooth ring gear measured 8.2 inches.  I was expecting 8.5 since it was removed from a 71 Cutlass. Still trying to find out if I can use the4 housing with a 8.5 posi set up.  Question still remains if GM used 8.2 ring gears in the lower numerically housings because of the large pinion gear.

Again, any help will be much appreciated.
