keiser31 Posted September 1, 2015 Share Posted September 1, 2015 Saw a sad story this morning about a couple out riding in their Model A Ford and hit a tree in Temple City, California. The car went up in flames and both occupants were killed. I really hate to see these types of stories and my thoughts go out to their family and friends. It appeared that the impact forces were not all that great and it probably would have been a survivable crash were it not for the fire. Don't Model A's have cowl-mounted fuel tanks? Guest AlCapone Posted September 1, 2015 Share Posted September 1, 2015 My sincere thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends, I have several Model A Ford vehicles and I have always been acutely aware that the gas tank is only inches away from me and my wife. I am not only a car guy, but also a life long surfer. We always say that if we have to go it would be much better going while doing something we love. I would rather die riding a 40 ft wave than lying in a hospital bed dying of cancer. Wayne's comments were from the heart. Thanks Wayne, I get what you are saying. I'm hoping some morning around 9 AM a person says "Bernie can't make the meeting today. He died yesterday."- Forty years from now. The doctor said plan on it, just don't expect it.Three years ago I had a big exciting day. I walked all the way from the house to the garage, 130 feet. Two years ago I was on the road at 5:30 AM to make an 8 AM meeting 100 miles away and felt normal again. This weekend I will walk 6 miles along the Erie Canal and meet my wife for lunch. GrogYes, all Model A Fords have their gas tank in the cowling, the tank actually forming what we always call the "dashboard". In addition, Model A had it's upper steering column mounted in a bracket on the bottom of the tank--which over time often leads to fatigue cracking of the steel tank right there (used to see that a lot in Model A's in my time of owning are restoring them as a college student in the mid-late 1960's--one almost always smelled gasoline inside the car!). Chances are that the crash caused the steering column to simply tear apart the bottom of the tank, the result being a flood of gasoline down on the floor, through the floorboard onto the hot exhaust pipe.
