Pomeroy41144
Interesting collection of 1940s cars and late 1930s cars on a bombing range in the badlands. Tough to ID these. Just not enough there. What is car # 32? http://www.nebraskaaircrash.com/bombingrange/badlands.html Edited September 1, 2015 by Pomeroy41144 (see edit history)

Dave Mellor NJ
I say 49. Trunk hinges external and pull out handles. 50 had a push button. It was fun looking.

Woodfiddler
Thanks Pomeroy for the link and this thread. I noticed that we can help identify the cars as labeled below the the last 3 cars. With all the skills that frequent this site, it should take no time at all! (ha-ha) I just spent over 40 minutes trying to decide about photo #70 and I still don't know. Who had a mid to late 30's business coupe with a split and quite square back window like #70? I'm pushing away for a stint, my right eye floaters have reappeared. Help me, I'm addicted....

Guest
Number 70 is definately a '38 Buick. Dashboard is a match too, along with the other points in Dave's photo.
Woodfiddler
Thanks Dave and Greg. I see and like those 1938 Buick Special Business coupes. It reminds me of the moonshine runners cars. FAST! I moved on to #71. Its a two door. Is that a core lock under the door handle? And what is with the chrome retainers(?) below the split windscreen? Wiper mounts or...?Thanks to everyone for helping to learn these great marques!
Beltfed
Anyone notice what is missing in the photos? If it's a bombing range, then where are the bomb craters? Could the U.S. Air Force be that bad at hitting their targets? I flew as a crew chief in Army helos, OH-6, UH-1H, UH-60, and have been down range many times. I never saw a vehicle target that didn't have thousands of holes in it. Edited September 2, 2015 by Beltfed (see edit history)
Bleach
I noticed this too. Kind of odd to see these cars just mangled and without holes.Did the bombs just blow off all the attached parts and leave stripped bodies?

Woodfiddler
I'm thinking #71 is a 1941 Oldsmobile 2 door coupe. Edited September 2, 2015 by Woodfiddler (see edit history)

Maybe it's not a bombing range at all; perhaps it's a holy site known as "Carhenge" Or, it could be a calibrated target range and/or landing spot for 'The Mother Ship'. The severely dented roofs of many of the cars indicates an alien presence, since we all know how aliens, having tired of dancing on the head of a pin, now break dance on car roofs. If I can find my tinfoil hat, I should be able to figger this hole thing out. Now what?,Grog
Mark Simmons
Strange, no wheels, power trains or frames. As mentioned no bomb craters or even collateral damage from nearby explosions. Some parts seemed to have been mechanically removed while others were ripped off. So I say what we have here is a car field circle as opposed to a corn field circle. Probably the same group of aliens LOL
capngrog
Much to my embarrassment, there is an actual 'Carhenge', and it is located on the north side of Alliance, Nebraska. Here's a link: http://carhenge.com/ Here's a photo:

capngrog
A lot of bombing ranges in WWII did not use live ordnance (real, exploding bombs), but instead used ballasted practice bombs that had a black powder marking charge. This could explain the dented roofs, lack of bomb craters and lack of shrapnel holes in the cars. I live in Paisley, Florida, approximately 15 miles from a Naval live bombing range. They don't drop live ordnance all that often, but when they do, the sound and feel, from 15 miles away, is quite noticeable. With the above said, we cannot disregard the 'Mother Ship' theory ... JACK M
I don't think the use real bombs in practice. I bet they used bags of flour or the likes.Does this place smell like grandmas kitchen?
Hudsy Wudsy
Another quick "at a glance" way to tell '49 Fords from '50s is that '49s still had the outside gas cap, while '50s had a door concealing the gas cap. Of course, you have to be glancing at the drivers side for this tip to work.
