The Great Race movie & Cutlass or MC

Has anyone seen this movie, TGR?  I have not, but sounds like maybe I should!

A bit surprised the Cutlass received all the votes so far, shutting out the MC.  Which would you choose!?

You are joking. Late 60s Olds vs a late 70s MC. On my return from SEA I nearly bought a W31 four speed in Saturn Yellow but went for a Buick GS instead. That 350 Olds was underrated IMNSHO.

ps I have quite an extensive collection of car movies and such, many on VHS but DVDs are gaining.

I would have assumed anyone over the age of 40 has seen the Great Race 10 times.  Maybe under the age of 30 never heard of it.

LOL!  A couple people in their 20s knew about it, while some in their 50s didn't.  Always interesting to see who knows what movies, etc. ;)

It tells me the Oldsmobile Underground is doing what they do best...

Yes, they certainly are!

Nope, not joking.  I love having these type of pairings because it isn't something you see paired together every day.  Keeps people on their toes, too.  While this wasn't a huge surprise, some prior ones have been.

As for your collection ... what all do you have?

Just click on the .sig.

OH movies ? Have really lost track but probably the ealiest other than some shorts is Harold Lloyd's "Speedy" & a few other pre-war (Jimmie Stewart in "Speed") but most are later like "To Please a Lady", "The Big Wheel","The Fast and the Furious" (Roger Corman), Both Italian Jobs, "Johnny Dark", "Grand Prix" "Gone in 60 Seconds" with the original soundtrack (actually have all of Toby's movies - Slicer was the inspiration for F&F6), "Dirty Mary, Crazy, Larry", "Gumball Rally", "Vanishing Point" with the missing 8 minutes. "LeMans" That sort of thing.

Did tend to avoid anything that used a Hicam though was a little in VP.

I recall it used to be shown during Thanksgiving and I always looked forward to seeing it. I didn't realize how much it was edited down so it would fit in a TV movie time slot until I got my own copy several years ago. I may have to watch it again soon as I haven't watched it in probably 10 years now.

Ha, yep, I meant your movie collection. ;)  Sounds like a cool group of movies!

See, this is why I don't like watching a movie I haven't seen on TV ... b/c sometimes huge chunks are left out.  I'd rather get a copy of it & watch that 1st ... to be sure I see ALL of the movie as intended.  Heck, I've caught a few over-the-air classic TV networks cutting vintage shows.  SMH.

We have two of the Great Leslie cars made for "The Great Race", and two of the Hannibal 8s from the same film, at the Stahl Museum in Chesterfield Township, MI.

They were made at Warner Bros. studios by the WB technical staff. The Great Leslie cars were made from the lengthened chassis of a '57 Ford F series pick up, they had a fleet of pickups at the studio to schlep goods back and forth. When this project came up they were about to replace the fleet with new trucks and wondered if these "antique cars" could be made out of a Ford Truck chassis. Warner Bros. talked Firestone into paying for a great deal of the construction costs of these vehicles in exchange for having the Firestone logo appear prominently in all scenes where the two cars appear.

The Hannibal 8 (all 5 of them!) were built from the ground up, using Corvair drivetrain components.  As cars...........................they are good movie props.

If anyone is interested, the way to tell the original "Gone" from the remastered is the blues "Moving On" in the opening. Seems Toby played rather fast and loose with many things including copyrights and when Denise remastered for high definition the sound track had to be changed to eliminate the unlicensed pieces. So you have a choice of a VHS (only available used AFAIK) with the original soundtrack or a remastered DVD without.

Like Vanishing Point with the missing eight minutes (Charlotte Rampling in the passenger seat), there are some car movies that require a quest. (Blue cover with helicopters)

BTW the most difficult one to obtain was a DVD of "A Man and A Woman". Mine is in French with English subtitles. Is really better that way.

Isn't the ultimate collection when you don't remember what you have ? or is that just age ?

I recall seeing one of the Leslie cars in another movie that was painted red. In one of the scenes it was destroyed by a train so I guess there at least one less of the original total.
