Durant Mike
Anyone out there have the new Ram 1500 with the 6 cylinder Diesel engine in it? I was wondering does Cummings make that diesel and how she was towing. I've been looking at it since a friend of mine just got one and it's a real nice truck. Diesel is very quite. I'll probably be pulling a single car enclosed trailer with about a 2,500 lb car.
1940TORPEDO
Cummins does not make the engine. It is an Italian made motor by VM motori. I have not driven one but from the reviews I have read it should be able to pull that load without much of an issue.
one-shot
I have one, (4 months) 4x4 Outdoorsman wquad cab, 6ft 6in bed, towing package. Have not towed a trailer yet. Thats coming, But I have loaded it down and its great on the gas pipelines getting to our hunting areas. Some folks have had real issues. Wife says it rides as good as her car. Not cheap. I'm happy. 7000 miles plus and mileage almost 24 overall Check the Ram Blogs/sites.Harold
FLYER15015
Is this one of the 500,000 that Fiat is buying back ?
one-shot
NO,Much earlier production runs and I believe Assembled in Mexico.Couple weeks ago I used it to move three old Hit and miss engines out of the woods, that the owner thought were tree locked in. And moved several old cars on the rims, for ingress and egress. Piece of cake. No mess no fuss. Durant Mike
Thanks Harold for your input. I good friend of mine just bought one too, but has not had it long enough to give me an evaluation. I've seen his truck and it is one nice looking truck! His is not even broke in yet and is getting around 25 mpg. A friend of his who has about 30,000 miles on one is pushing around 29 mpg. I was reading that this was the diesel engine that Cadillac was looking real hard at for their CTS version that they sell over in Europe, but I think they headed in a different direction. I'll keep doing my research though, still a couple of months away from my final decision. Seems the most logical for me right now though, since I have the antique car that I will eventually pull to shows, and you get the luxury and great ride too. The other trucks out there only offer a diesel in the 2500 series, which is more commercial and much more expensive too.
one-shot
In Hind sight (20/20) I would get the back up camera also. (Still might) Read the blogs and ask questions, (The folks are almost as helpful as here and just as opinionated) the packages and accessories are daunting. Towing package and towing mirrors. Love the mirrors, they flip up or regular, and flip back when things are really tight. Harold
Restorer32
Son has a 2011 Dodge 3500 Cummins we use for towing. The back up camera is GREAT! Makes solo trailer hook up so much easier. Also have one in wife's Jeep. Hopefully it will stop her from backing into the corner of the garage, again.
Durant Mike
No question on the quality of the Cummings. My son had a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 with a Cummings engine. Great truck, got 24 miles per gallon on highway, 17 towing, can't beat that. I was mad at him when he traded it in, wanted him to sell it to me. Wished Dodge had kept the Cummings but looks like the motor they put in has been OK. Cadillac was looking at it for their CTS, so couldn't be that bad. Boy, if Dodge had kept the Cummings, added the Alison Transmission, they would have walked away with the market. Now that's a great combination. I'll keep watching the forums on the diesels and go take one out I guess. Want a nice truck to be able to pull my Durant in an enclosed trailer. Thanks for the replies. my31buick
I do not believe they got rid of the cummins. Still have it in the 2500-3500 trucks. the 1/2 tons are just too light for that heavy cummins. I believe this new diesel in the half ton trucks is aluminum alloy block. so much lighter from the word go.

Thanks for the replies.I used to tow with 1500 6.2 GMC Denali had two of them. 10,000 GVW trailer loaded scaled to 9,400. Finally got smart and have a F350 diesel. Best change I ever made as the 6.2 didn't have the torque and was doing much shifting thus very high transmission temperatures. I'd stay with the 2500-3500 Dodge or F250-350 Ford diesels for towing. My two cents of opinionRobert
39BuickEight
Not being able to pull into any gas station I want drives me nuts. We took Dad's diesel fishing last weekend and were limited to a very few gas stations along the way, often exiting and having to get back on without finding diesel, wasting time along the way. Also, many new 1/2 ton trucks are approaching the same MPGs. My $.02.

Durant Mike
Pulled the trigger and bought the Ram 1500 eco-diesel. What a truck!. I haven't had any problem finding diesel fuel and down here where I live in Central Florida some stations have been only a few cents more for diesel. But it doesn't matter to me. Went on a road trip twice in it and was pushing 30 to 31 mpg on the truck. Now that is here in flat Florida, but still a great truck. It is an Italian diesel owned by GM and Fiat that produce the engines in Europe for a number of vehicles. Not a Cummings I agree, but from what I understand Cummings does not make a smaller diesel. Towing capacity is above what I need to tow my car and trailer and still have some wiggle room. Owners are reporting 17 to 19 mpg towing. I'll let everyone know what she tows like, when I start to tow with her.
oldIHtruck
hello??? A Dodge diesel with an Aluminum block...steer clear. Get a used Dodge 2500 / 3500 with the 5.9 diesel and have it refurbished. Good for 250,000 - 300,000 miles. Don't hold your breath for that foreign aluminum engine to deliver those type of long lasting results...If you're in it for the trend - get the right tools to start with... Durant Mike
Doesn't have an aluminum block, only aluminum heads. Block is steel. This diesel has been used in Europe for years and the company has been in business since 1949. Time will tell with these, but Cummings didn't have anything that would fit the size wanted and get the fuel economy everybody wanted. My Son had a Dodge 2500, 2005 but sold it. That was a great truck, got good mileage, not as good as this one, but it's getting great reviews by Ram owners. I'm 100% happy with it and think it's a great truck. I'll report back after a couple 100,000 miles.
real61ss
I'm traveling on I 95, headed south to Fl and saw one of these Dodge enco trucks. We traveled together for probably 50 miles. He was pulling what appeared to be a 20' enclosed aluminum trailer. Don't know how much weight was in it but the truck seemed to be doing a fine job. What supprised me was he had no weight distribution or sway control hitch but he was running 75 mph with no issues.Forgot go say it was an extra tall trailer like you would haul an early car in. Truck looked new. Edited November 25, 2015 by real61ss (see edit history)

It is spelled and pronounced "Cummins".I feel better, now.
countrytravler
Kinda off the small truck. My very first Cummings (WHOOPS) Cummins. It was used for the trade shows for Freightliner in 1995. Had 3000 miles and loaded with all the bells and whisils. Had a 500HP Cummins with a double over 15 speed. It was a double-digit truck (would do over a 100 MPH) Got a Million plus miles out of that truck. In 1995, paid 85,000 for the truck. Durant Mike
Well I wanted to give an update on the truck. Now at 10,000 miles, still at 31 to 32 mpg on the highway, around 25 in city. Took a 3 hour trip pulling a U-haul enclosed trailer, probably a little over 1,000 pounds. Mileage was around 27. I know many swear by the Cummins and the larger 2500 Ram, but if you just have one car and your combination is not over 10,000 pounds, I recommend the eco-diesel. Personally I am stilled amazed by it.
