nifty 6
Good day, Need some advise. I want to take the glass bowl off the fuel pump to clean it plus the screen. The bowl looks dirty with a dark and whitish coating. Getting to it from underneath looks difficult because of the cross member. Is my only option removing the pump from the engine? Also I had the carb rebuilt, what would the torque be for bolting it down?I also want to put a in-line fuel filter before the fuel pump instead of after the fuel pump. Would this cause issues?ThanksRon.
rocketraider
You should be able to unscrew the wire bail and drop the filter bowl out from under the car. My 64s have a recess in the frame crossmember to clear the glass bowl. I'd use some carb cleaner or other solvent to clean the bowl and bail good before trying to monkey with it much, and if it hasn't been off in a while the thumbwheel may be seized. Be gentle. That carb should have a cast iron throttle plate. Somewhere around 10-20 ft-lbs should be plenty. No more than 30. I run inline filters on suction side of my fuel pumps and have seen no issues. I like metal-bodied ones if I can find them, clear plastic if I can't. I do not under any circumstances recommend those glass and chromed potmetal filters that can be taken apart. They are hazardous and should be outlawed.
nifty 6
Thanks, still can't see how to remove the glass bowl. The cross member, the control arm and exhaust appear to be in the way. It doesn't appear to be a easy access from underneath. Will have a second look from underneath. In what direction to turn the wheel that holds the glass bowl?Ron
D Yaros
The wheel would turn counter clockwise to loosen.
nifty 6
I managed to get the glass bowl off, no problem. Full of rusty powder, My repair manual doesn't show what I think is a screen at the bottom of the pump that is in the glass bowl which is also covered in rusty powder. Does that screen come out by pulling it down so I can clean it? or leave it in the pump and spray it down with brake cleaner to clean it.Thanks Ron
Tedd Thompson
The screen can be picked out with any small sharp tool like a ice pick, if you are careful it can be used over again...Tedd
