scott209
My 1990 developed a miss over the weekend. Very intermittant. One minute it will miss and then be perfectly fine for many miles. Occurs when just warmed up or after completely warmed up.It threw the dredded E 041 code. I had this code 8 years ago. I used the glue the magnet fix then. That time it ran fine and the check engine light never went off. This time the light goes off and on. I already did the Pagett ICM fix.Any suggestions?Scott Shaw
Guest Corvanti
you might try a cleaning of the connection to the cam sensor with electronic cleaner, clear the code and see what happens. if E041 shows back up, idk if it's possible to do the "Padgett Fix" twice on the same sensor - others (and Padgett) may know. if you need another one: http://thereattastore.com/acdelco-213-145-camshaft-position-sensor/
Ronnie
Perhaps the cam sensor has gone bad or there is a bad connection in the wiring going to it. I've not heard of the cam sensor causing an intermittent miss but I guess it is possible.
TexasJohn55
Likely order of prominence: Wires, plugs and coil. Just replaced one coil on wifes car for same thing. I got lucky, after several weeks, having already replaced the wires and plugs(plugs needed), knowing it was a coil but which one, it finally set a code for missfire #2 cyl. Replaced that coil and back to normal again.
Guest speedfreek155
Sounds crazy , but I had an intermittent miss that was making me lose what little of my mind I have left , one day car died going down highway . I'm like WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT !!!! sounded like it wanted to restart but it had to be towed . The culprit ..... my alternator was apparently hanging up and finally seized . It was recently replaced by PO so I wasn't actually looking in that direction . Maybe try getting it to operating temp , and when the miss appears , pull the serp belt and run it a bit and see if it still misses. Kinda a shot in the dark , but it may help . P. S. Mine is a 1990 also Edited June 20, 2015 by speedfreek155 (see edit history)
scott209
I used the FSM to diagnosis the problem. Voltage between the A-B connectors was running at 5.6 which indicated a bad coil pack. I replaced all three of the Delco packs and the car has run fine ever sincel.Scott
scott209
After two hundred miles, the miss has returned. I still get 5.6 volts between A-B connectors of the cam sensor plug. I have replaced the ICM with a new one, replaced cam sensor, and checked the wiring for shorts, swopped ECM.The scenario is: Service engine light will be on, car runs fine. Light wil go out, car runs fine for awhile, engine will stumble, light goes on, code E041, car runs fine for days more. Repeat scenario.Suggestions? Thanks Scott Shaw
padgett
Sure sounds like a wiring isue since you have thrown about every part at it. E041 may be misdirection since secondary ignition problems (ICM, Cois, Wires, Plugs) will not set codes. I'd ignore that for the monent. (Did you say it stumbles THEN gets 41 immediately ?) Best would be to put on a scope but few places have them with the adapter for integrated ignitions. High voltages act funny. I'd run until missing. Park in a dark place, and look for any sparking around the wires or plugs. Might also remove all heat shields for the plugs (easy path to ground). Alternative: just replace all plug wires with 9mm. Have seen a bad plug act intermittant but not for years.
ChrisWhewell
When I was younger, it seemed lots of people kept me "in the dark" about lots of things. I learned from it and so, when I get an ignition miss, I embrace the darkness, fire up that motor in the garage at nite with no illumination and look for stray sparks. About 1/3 of the time the issue shows itself. Of course, ensure adequate ventilation I have also a pen-like tool / wand with a neon bulb in it you can put on each plug wire and check for irregularities with. Its an old school tool I think you can still find them at most decent auto parts stores. May have secondary utility in testing the spark of your sweetie, lol.
