It all started 10 years ago (http://forums.aaca.org/topic/71039-on-the-way-to-batavia/?hl=batavia).This should serve as fair warning to anybody in our way north of Texas and an invitation to other drivers from Texas to join the fun. There are no caravans, schedules or other requirements; just a bunch of independent contractors that sometimes end up at the same place. Barney Eaton Posted June 1, 2015 Share Posted June 1, 2015 I just returned from a 3100 mile trip to Detroit and back. I saw some high rip-off gas prices but the highest I paid anywhere was $2.79. I remember paying $2.31 in Springfield. I can make it from home to Springfield in 10+ hours, depending on how much ice tea I drink. Thinking about leaving on Monday and shooting for McAlester or maybe Muskogee, shortening the days to about 5 hours and giving us some time to stop and buy more junk. Last week the grandson and I stopped in Springfield and had the lunch buffet at Bass Pro Shops huge store in Springfield. It is a must see for everyone, even if you don't hunt, fish, or camp out. It is listed at 300,000 sq feet, besides the stuff they sell, they have tanks with fish, ponds (one with alligators) a archery museum and NRA gun museum. Cant wait for the 60's - 80's in Springfield. One of the advantages of having an earlier meet, it won't be 95 - 106 like it has been at prior meets. old-tank Posted June 5, 2015 Author Share Posted June 5, 2015 450 miles to windy Lubbock TX. No issues, except that the mechanical fuel pump could not keep up with temps over 90*. I plan to get over Raton Pass this year (vapor lock using mechanical and electric pumps kicked my ass last year even though we had no problems 3x before). My orientation is "whatever it takes" to get the best and most consistent judging results, but there CAN be an optimum time for such activities, which can be variable. I've observed that restoration "levels of execution" have tended to increase over the past decades, which can necessitate the "additional scrutiny" approach, when necessary. It must have been the &*%$# Airtex fuel pump that had an intermittent failure. Gas mileage is 15-18 mpg (don't ask buick5563 what he gets--- he'll say'that new car smell'). Not to mention all the stop lights..Anyway we are outside of Branson tonight. Hot and humid is the weather with afternoon showers. We are going trout fishing in the river in the middle of Branson. We are on Table Rock lake but our guide says Bass fishing sucks at the moment. So trout it is. Pictures if we catch anything. Yesterday morning a front took all the humidity away and it was only in the low 80 si stead of the mid 90 s. We are in Springfield and cars have started to show up. Met up with Jesse from Michigan who brought his 48 Roadmaster. Also saw a needs to be chomed dual quad air cleaner at one of the vendors.
