Texas Road Warriors --- Springfield Invasion

Use the forum search feature (BCA General ... texas road warriors) to find some of our previous (mis)adventures.  It all started 10 years ago (http://forums.aaca.org/topic/71039-on-the-way-to-batavia/?hl=batavia).

This should serve as fair warning to anybody in our way north of Texas and an invitation to other drivers from Texas to join the fun.  There are no caravans, schedules or other requirements; just a bunch of independent contractors that sometimes end up at the same place.  Also, participants should save up for gas and oil (we're driving Buicks after all) and stock up on sliced Barbeque Brisket and Fajitas...if gas prices go up any more consider baloney sandwiches.

Sun is out and its going to evaporate the 13 + inches of rain we have had in Austin this past month.

I am looking forward to getting on the road and seeing what some other parts of the country look like.

PS.. Thnaks for posting the thread about Batavia. I had forgotten some of the details of that adventure.

I just returned from a 3100 mile trip to Detroit and back.   I saw some high rip-off gas prices but the highest I paid anywhere was $2.79.    I remember paying $2.31 in Springfield.    I can make it from home to Springfield in 10+ hours, depending on how much ice tea I drink.     Thinking about leaving on Monday and shooting for McAlester or maybe Muskogee,  shortening the days to about 5 hours and giving us some time to stop and buy more junk.

Last week the grandson and I stopped in Springfield and had the lunch buffet at Bass Pro Shops huge store in Springfield.   It is a must see for everyone, even if you don't hunt, fish, or camp out.  It is listed at 300,000 sq feet,  besides the stuff they sell, they have tanks with fish, ponds (one with alligators)  a archery museum and NRA gun museum.

See you in Springfield  next week.

For those of you who don't know, I am going on the Great Race again as Pat and Pat's support driver. My 12 year old son Woody is my assistant. The first leg of my summer vacation (to Springfield) is surprisingly the closest BCA National in a while, which is why I am adding bumpers and generally having too much confidence in the wagon. :D

Watch out for those higher altitudes!  But if you can get past Plainview or Muleshoe, it'll probably be ok.  You're not trying to stay on "higher ground", Old-Tank?

Don't forget about the OK toll roads, unless you have a TX Toll Tag already.

Y'all have a safe and enjoyable trip!

I leave Friday morning... going to hang out on Table Rock lake outside of Branson and do some fishing for a few days before Springfield.

Cant wait for the 60's - 80's in Springfield. One of the advantages of having an earlier meet, it won't be 95 - 106 like it has been at prior meets.

450 miles to windy Lubbock TX.  No issues, except that the mechanical fuel pump could not keep up with temps over 90*.  I plan to get over Raton Pass this year (vapor lock using mechanical and electric pumps kicked my ass last year even though we had no problems 3x before).  If we make it, a 2 day stay in Dillon CO is planned before leaving for Springfield.

We're leaving first thing Monday. The earlier the better to beat the heat. We should be in Monday evening in our B-59 road warrior.

Took her for a 60 mile shakedown today. No issues other than a bit of brake pull. I need to hire a new mechanic. :)

I understand the "Don't kill the car" orientation, but it might be that such can be necessary in some cases . . . not "killing" anything, but rather "additional scrutiny" instead. In these cases, anything less than "additional scrutiny" can lead to mediocrity, from my experiences at other shows. My orientation is "whatever it takes" to get the best and most consistent judging results, but there CAN be an optimum time for such activities, which can be variable. I've observed that restoration "levels of execution" have tended to increase over the past decades, which can necessitate the "additional scrutiny" approach, when necessary.

All the more reason not to kill the car and get judges off the show field quicker

Another 450 miles to cooler Pueblo CO.  No problems getting over Raton Pass this year.  It must have been the &*%$# Airtex fuel pump that had an intermittent failure.  Gas mileage is 15-18 mpg (don't ask buick5563  what he gets---  he'll say'that new car smell').  Next stop Dillon Co where the high temp today was 45*.

Pete. If you plan ongoing 69/75 through OK, you may want to rethink. Lots of construction and one lane roads. Not to mention all the stop lights..

Anyway we are outside of Branson tonight. Hot and humid is the weather with afternoon showers. We are going trout fishing in the river in the middle of Branson. We are on Table Rock lake but our guide says Bass fishing sucks at the moment. So trout it is. Pictures if we catch anything.

Tuesday Am and we are ready to make the long and tiring drive to Springfield it's all of 35 miles from where we spent the weekend. Yesterday morning a front took all the humidity away and it was only in the low 80 si stead of the mid 90 s.

This morning is great too.

Looking forward to seeing you all there.

I thought my internet connection at the fishing lodge was slow. HA. The one at this Holiday Inn is the speed of a 3/4 dead snail.

Anyway. We are in Springfield and cars have started to show up. Met up with Jesse from Michigan who brought his 48 Roadmaster. Also saw a needs to be chomed dual quad air cleaner at one of the vendors. No, I did not ask the price.
