tonybuick, always a good thing to try and eliminate some oil leaks. I just re-gasketed and sealed with permatex No. 2 the push rod covers on my '26-26. No more leaks there for now. Is that some kind of downdraft carburetor I see?

Tony:

Thanks for posting the photos as this is a job I will need to do on my 1925-25. I want to locate a timing gear set before I start pulling things apart. My camshaft/pulley seal does leak quite a bit. Everything on mine did leak a bit but after I redid the clutch now I am getting transmission oil from the lower cover.

 Another mystery to solve.

I was just going to make a start on the buick but it is almost done and I also made a cover to go over the crank shaft  none of the jobs around home are done .my son was away for the weekend and things went well (he always wants a hand with his cars)

hi az bob yes it is a down draft carb I have added more pictures for you

hi dibarlaw when I did my motor up I got a camshaft timing gear from a 4 cylinder buick car as they are aluminium should never break

Tony, Great job on the crank cover esp. the knurling and slots! Is that aluminum or steel?  Are you satisfied with the way the downdraft performs?

Bob:
This is what I did on my 25. At Lowes they had heavy wall chrome plated brass tubing for drains. I made an arbor to hold it between centers and Knurled  the outside. Then made a press fit aluminum plug for the end. Hand cut and filed the slot. I have a spring inside to keep tension on the end of the crankshaft

Larry, nice job on the crank cover. Your approach to using the chrome plated brass drain tubing eliminates the need to "hog out" solid bar stock. In addition to being readily available and finished with plating as well.

hi all yes I used steel bar  lots of waste on the floor to clean up

I find the down draft carb works well you need to fit a fuel pump to make it work I don't have fuel dripping out the front and it starts well  and its consistent you can go up hill down hill and it just goes no dead spots no back firing or running rich and you can fit a air cleaner  and I can buy parts for the carb if need be

I still have the old carb so I could put it back on but I don't think id ever go back

Nice job Larry with the tube,I have the  original ones on my 1925.

tonybuick.I compared the 1924 4 cyl.timing gear and the 1925 gear as in the pictures, but as I can see there needs some machine job on the 4 cyl.timing gears to fit on 1925-1928

hi leif  I am not sure about the machining as far as I can remember we just fitted it and it was ok to use it was some time ago that I did the motor up   from your pictures the front of the pulley is taller wouldn't this just make the fan belt pulley (cam shaft pulley)  sit further out . would be enough space on the fan pulley to take this up maybe I don't seem to have any problems with the set up

I learnt about using the 4 cly pulley from a club member other wise I would not have known about it

maybe the machine shop altered the pulley doesn't look like it thou  but it would be worth the effort I would think

its good to learn more about the early buicks thanks tony
