v12lincoln
I took my differential apart to replace an axle, after the brakes were off I noticed this axle seal. After cleaning the axle tubes I could not find any machined area inside for the standard ford oil seal that goes inside.Does anyone know where I can get this weird type of axle grease seal? Mssr. Bwatoe
i suspect that is an add-on, interesting..the rear wheel bearings were designed to be lubricated by lube that passes throughthis opening..which is then capped off by the drum seal Edited May 28, 2015 by Mssr. 19tom40
I believe that the seal is an aftermarket item used to keep the differential gear oil from leaking onto the shoes, when the inner axle seal fails. These show up on E-Bay from time to time. BTW the photo posted by Mssr Bwatoe shows the wear that can cause an axle to break. That housing should have a sleeve installed. peecher
Jack, The only "seal" I've ever seen in this area is a felt material behind the washer. I think someone has used an after market seal. Mac's offer a inner axle retainer so this might work for you.
v12lincoln
I found a place that sells them but it's cash and carry only, Don's antique auto parts in Fremont Ca. He charges 35 each. To much time to drive down there and back in that crappy bay area traffic and seals are way to much. So have to take my diff back apart to see why the passenger axle is an inch farther inside the housing than it should be so will replace the original seals then. peecher
An inch shorter sounds like you have a '40 axle in there?
