Does anyone know the process involved in the removal of the grill in a 1940 buick special ? Are any diagrams available in old publications ? I have removed the hood & all the bolts in the radiator overhead coweling but it wont come off and I cant get to the bolts that secure the grill. Does the radiator have to come out ?

On the '39s there is a sheet metal cover below the radiator that when removed will allow access to the rear of the grill and the attaching studs. Hope it is the same on the '40, but pretty much the same body, so good chance.

Good Luck.

Yes, that's correct for the 40's as well.  From underneath the car, just remove the big sheet metal cover  (pay attention to how it fits.. I finally gave up trying to re-install my cover afterwards!).

from there, you can reach up through the opening(s) to get to the nut/bolts that hold each grill in place.  There are bolts along the outer edge as well as the center.  Lots easier if you have a car lift, but not a terribly difficult job.
