VIN as we know them today did not start until the mid 1950's. Up until then was by engine number and/or chassis number and/or body number

yes that exactly my problem I have a 1940 D-2 titled in Missouri in 1950, and they used the engine number for the title but I bought it without  the motor, so the title is pretty much no good as there are no matching numbers.

I know there are some options ,I live in florida ,wich is one of the hardest states to get an out of state vehicle titled in.

just trying  and thanks for the reply

I also have a 1940 D-30 fire truck I got from Minnesota and the used the chassis number , very easy to verify.

not so easy with the D-2 with  missouri title
