Guest Lakewood90712
Going to pull the 72 Skylark 350 4bbl out of storage and start up on Saturday. It has been in storage for over 5 years. I got a oil pump primer tool. Want some oil flowing before turning the key. Run the drill motor and tool clockwise or counter clockwise ???. I plan to put on a new filter also , before startup. Roadmaster75
Also, do yourself a favor and start it on a gravity feed container to the carb BEFORE, you reconnectyour existing fuel system.5 Year old fuel will mess with your fuel pump, carb, and possibly the motor. Blow out all the linesand ensure that the rubber pieces are free of ethanol rot (from the inside out!)...in fact just replace them.Ideally drop the tank, but at least drain it dry and rinse with some fresh gas and drain againUse a pump if you have to.... put a new fuel filter on ,toomy 2 centsmike
Guest Lakewood90712
Thanks everyone. I didn't even think of the fuel lines !. Tank is bone dry , but who knows what is in the lines. I will report back with photos later today or tomorrow. (Photo added , got to dig the Skylark out of the garage) Edited June 9, 2013 by Lakewood90712 added photo (see edit history)
Guest Lakewood90712
Update: Finally got around to it. ( only 2 extra years ) Tank wasn't bone dry ! Pulled stale gas,new battery fresh gas, replaced rock hard rubber fuel lines. Spun the oil pump shaft, (CW) got oil pressure almost immediately. Real PITA getting the distributor back in the correct place, lining up the oil pump shaft drive. No spark. Towed to an independent shop ( the wrenches at this shop like to work on ol dogs like my Skylark ). New points, vac advance, and accelerator pump. Starts instantly . After driving it around a bit, not sure I want to sell it anymore. Edited October 10, 2015 by Lakewood90712 (see edit history)
NTX5467
If you haven't already done so, plan on a new fuel pump too. When the diaphram has been exposed to ethanol'd fuel, then is allowed to dry out, it's claimed that it makes the "ethanol resistant neoprene" rubber brittle. A brittle fuel pump diaphram will probably fail/leak in due time. Best to get it replaced before you might have a problem. I also hope you replaced the rear-most rubber fuel line at the fuel tank, too? Kind of interesting how that when you get something running again, how the sentimental feelngs rekindle after you hear it run and drive it around. Heck, just sitting in it can start them, sometimes. Been there, done that! Also, keeping it keeps those "I should've kept THAT one" conversations from happening in the future. Enjoy!NTX5467 Edited October 10, 2015 by NTX5467 (see edit history)
Guest Lakewood90712
" I also hope you replaced the rear-most rubber fuel line at the fuel tank, too? " The ones above the rear axle ? , not yet . Lots of easy / inexpensive things to do. The brake lines are originals , and the brake booster doesn't seem to be doing much, this car used to throw you into the windshield if you stomped on it. Now it has a hard pedal. The shop reports linings 50% front , 90% rear, no leaks. Water pump shaft wiggles , but no leaks, horn inop, ( not the relay).Sway bar link rubbers cracked. Not going to drive it much until the above are taken care of. The A/C leaks.Everything is bone stock, except the radio. I listed it on craigslist back in 2013, Had so many calls , even after I took the ad down, I had to shut off my phone for a while. Seems Buick collectors are , uh, a bit Tenacious . This Skylark was bought new by my late grandmother in El Paso, nov. 1971, handed down to my mom around 1980 , and parked when mom stopped driving a few years back. Now it is in my garage. 83,000 original miles. Same family ownership for 43 years, maybe I should find a place in my garage for it until I can't drive anymore. Guest Lakewood90712
More progress, ALL rubber fuel lines replaced, front and rear rubber brake lines and the master cylinder replaced. Driving it at least once a week now. Water pump is next. Also considering stiffer springs. Looking at rock auto, a dizzying number of part numbers from moog and others. Was there a sport model with stiffer suspension ?
s_hilmoe
Check with Eaton Detroit Springs too. They can make pretty much any spring you need, stock or custom. Call them up and tell therm exactly what you want to do and they'll fix you right up.
