I found this in a barn with a bunch of different car parts and I figure it is some sort of part to a vehicle, but I have no idea what.

It is brass and has some writings on it, but it looks like it has been completely taken apart.

It measures just short of 24" long and is 6 1/2" in diameter.

Any help on identifying it would be great.

My French is limited but "l'eau" is water, depart and retour are obvious. Vapeur is steam. Maybe some kind of water heater??

Is it part of a carbide gas generator? Doesn't water drip on a piece of carbide or something & make gas? I've never studied one or how they work. Do they use a return?
