A comment on painting aluminum drums.  I had someone tell me some time ago, that painting aluminum drums had a tendency to cause the aluminum to hold heat rather than dissipate it.  I don't know where he got his info nor have I heard it from anyone else.  But in a way it makes sense. Has anyone else heard the Same?  He said the same applied to polishing them as well.  Something having to do with "closing the porosity" of the aluminum. ????

Rivnut, polished aluminum will tend to have a lower convective coefficient of heat transfer than a rough one.  With a polished surface you are essentially flattened the microscopic surface roughness far more than a raw cast surface.  All those nooks and crannies allow heat to transfer (more surface area touching the air).

Paint would essentially be like wrapping a part in super thin blanket.  The effect is probably minimal, but paint would negatively affect heat transfer.

we used to use lacquer thinner.

Ed, I took your suggestion and used some lacquer thinner to break the staining on my white walls. I then used Bleche White and a stainless steel scrub brush to deep clean the tires. Though not bright white, the WWs are whiter than they were. Thank you for your suggestion. FYI, lacquer thinner will soften rubber and plastic so rinsing with soapy water between applications of thinner is highly recommended.

New Master Cylinder painted with same Cast Iron color. I am thinking about masking off my brake booster and painting it with cadmium colored paint.

Boster Dewey does a great job at a fair price.

Champaign poly' will work too. But brake fluid dissolves most paints.

Gumby,

Tell us more about your 63.  Is it new to you?  If so, what are some of the reasons you chose to buy a Riviera?  Great looking car.  It appears to be an unmolested example of an original.  Great reference for any restorer.

Jim Cannon will want a picture of the Fisher Data plate so he can add this car to his 63 register. Plus any details on options.

That is the patina of 54 year old leather.  They might be able to be cleaned, but the cracks are there.  If like in my 63, you drive with them like that as long as possible. Then you finally break down and get them recovered for some real $$$$$. As long as you're not tearing up the foam, you just appreciate all they've been.

New to the Riviera owners world. Just bought this 65 and it was finally delivered. Going to start going through her this weekend I'm sure I'll be on here asking a lot of questions as this is my first classic car purchase. 20170608_225025.thumb.jpg.83bd777b9a6b123eab7773be406a0865.jpg

Chef, like two tone color, wheels, and stance. Enjoy your 65.

Congratulations!  You made and excellent choice!  Of course we are all biased here.  Ask away on your questions.  Think about joining Riviera Association https://www.rivowners.org/   There are some great forums there.  Their 1963-1965 specialist Tom Mooney #56 has been a big help to me.  Congratulations!

Finally got mine back out of the bodyshop after a 9 month sabbatical. Guy plowed me in the left 1/4 behind the tire and destroyed it and the rear bumper. Just redid the trunk this weekend since the original mat and cardboard had had it, and now just wanting to drive it as much as possible. Good living in the South, no crappy, salty winters, and warm weather sticks around a long time.

Very nice.  Tell us more.  Where did you find it, why a Riviera, how it's equipped?  How about some interior shots?  Is it original or has it been restored?

Thanks! It was originally a California car (sold by Kimball Motor Co. in San Luis Obispo) that the owner took with him when he and his wife retired and relocated to Indiana in 1992.  Now in his 90s, he no longer drives, so I purchased it and had it shipped back to California. It has the Deluxe option, blue leather upholstery, with a few interesting factory options, including cruise control. It had a repaint in '88, and the driver door was repaired and repainted a bout 10-15 years ago when the wife clipped it backing out of the garage. The color match is bad, so I'm having that addressed right now. He had a few things replaced during its life such as a couple of the power window and vent motors, quartz clock conversion, and bumpers rechromed in the mid-'90s. It needs a new exhaust, carpet, and tires, but being garage kept its entire life, everything else is original and in really nice shape.

Thanks for the update.  It's cars like yours that let everyone else know what was original in '63 so the rest of us can duplicate it.  Jim Cannon keeps a registry of '63 Riviera.  If you'd take a picture of your Fisher data plate and post it, I'm sure he like to add your car to the registry.  He keeps track of FB numbers and is able to chart mid year production changes based on those and the build date.  Thanks again.
