I had someone tell me some time ago, that painting aluminum drums had a tendency to cause the aluminum to hold heat rather than dissipate it. I don't know where he got his info nor have I heard it from anyone else. But in a way it makes sense. Has anyone else heard the Same? He said the same applied to polishing them as well. Hazdaz Posted September 1, 2017 Share Posted September 1, 2017 Rivnut, polished aluminum will tend to have a lower convective coefficient of heat transfer than a rough one. With a polished surface you are essentially flattened the microscopic surface roughness far more than a raw cast surface. All those nooks and crannies allow heat to transfer (more surface area touching the air). Paint would essentially be like wrapping a part in super thin blanket. If like in my 63, you drive with them like that as long as possible. Then you finally break down and get them recovered for some real $$$$$. Guy plowed me in the left 1/4 behind the tire and destroyed it and the rear bumper. Just redid the trunk this weekend since the original mat and cardboard had had it, and now just wanting to drive it as much as possible. It was originally a California car (sold by Kimball Motor Co. in San Luis Obispo) that the owner took with him when he and his wife retired and relocated to Indiana in 1992. Now in his 90s, he no longer drives, so I purchased it and had it shipped back to California. It has the Deluxe option, blue leather upholstery, with a few interesting factory options, including cruise control. It had a repaint in '88, and the driver door was repaired and repainted a bout 10-15 years ago when the wife clipped it backing out of the garage. The color match is bad, so I'm having that addressed right now. He had a few things replaced during its life such as a couple of the power window and vent motors, quartz clock conversion, and bumpers rechromed in the mid-'90s. It needs a new exhaust, carpet, and tires, but being garage kept its entire life, everything else is original and in really nice shape. Jim Cannon keeps a registry of '63 Riviera. If you'd take a picture of your Fisher data plate and post it, I'm sure he like to add your car to the registry.
