Mr Riviera
There has been a big interest in Tachs. for the 63-65 Rivs. When you find one for sale - be sure that it works ! Some were made to be repaired and some were NOT ! If you buy the one that cannot be repaired - you are out of luck. If someone says on Ebay that their unit has not been checked - what they are saying, for the most part, is that it does not work. Perhaps it can be fixed , perhaps not. The units that cannot be fixed have all the electronics incased in a hard plastic and cannot be worked on. I found this out the hard way years ago. From the out side I do not know of a way to tell whats inside. These Tachs are brnging big bucks so be aware.
tim63riv
Dick,Big enough bucks to repop? I see someone has done this with the "star wars" air cleaner for the 67 cars. Maybe a guy could do tachs, wood wheels, 64-65 road wheels and then retire! LOL!Tim
NTX5467
Were these particular factory Riv tachs "self-contained" or did they have the separate "control box" under the hood as the earlier '60s GM factory tachs did? Where you had to have BOTH pieces for the tach to work--period.Might the "encased in plastic" refer to electronic "potting compound"? If so, the potting compound can be cut-out and the defective circuit component replaced, and then new potting compound installed. There is a source for said potting compound that was listed in a GM bulletin on an air-bag module on early 2000s Cadillacs. Seems like it cost about $40.00 for a good size tube.Just some thougts and curiousities . . .NTX5467
