Restoring a 1931 "Barnfind" CD8 Roadster - Chassis ?'s

Recommended Posts

Some of you may have noticed some earler postings (see buy/sell forum) I made of a '31 Canadian built CD8 Roadster I recently acquired. Cas as shown here was found in a scrap yard circa 1950 stripped of drivetrain and brightwork, and was brought back from a rusting shell utilizing a '47 Cadillac V8, mated to a '35 Auburn rearend. I am in process of restoring it, and since car was altered somewhast in the 50's to accomodate the foreign drivetrain, I need help figuring out just what is original and what is added.

Well, I think on further examination I have an idea just what is going on with the back half of this chassis. While the front half of chassis has one piece roll formed or pressed steel side rails, from about the cowl back it has 3 piece welded 1/8" steel plate side rails, overlaping front section near cowl. These rear frame sections appear very well made, proper shape and profile, and neatly made as well as symetrical side to side. So the boxing/reinforcing is also an add on. At the rear, the 1950's era rebuilder "cut the shackle horns" from original car, including the riveted part of the original frame side rail, and welded them to the new 3 piece side rails 9see new pics).post-66253-143143078253_thumb.jpg Oddly, he did not bother to rivet/bolt the cast shackle mounts through the side rails as original manufactured. This eaplains why there are still original rivets in these areas, while only bolts in siderails forward from here. Also explains why one of the shackle mounts is slightly off vertical (I may be able to true it up). In view of the "home-made" nature of this work, even though apparently well done, I will have to spend some time going over full length ofv frame for any flaws, and make sure all crossmember are square and solidly mounted. Likely cannot use rivets, so will consider a mix of bolting and welding where po0ssible. If I had acceess to a good original CD8 chassis, I would consider using that, don't expect to find an inexpensive one within 1000 miles of here! restoring cars is so much fun!!!
