Thank you, that's what I thought but mine is in too bad a condition to tell for sure and my expertise goes back only to 1940 and even then it's ancient memories. Looking at it closely, there appears to be chrome-like particles in the rust but it struck me as odd that it may have been chromed when the inside of the lid is tan. Glad to know that it was simply painted.

The housing of the clock, such that the only portion visible once installed is that which is visible when the glove box door is opened, the back of the clock, is silver-grey, very similar to the dashboard background color. This is for certain based on a NOS clock I have in my archival collection.
